The long Easter weekend
was surely a nice break but
we were glad to get back
running at regular speed. Do
come and enjoy the Texas
wildflowers bulletin and
display that is “blooming”
luxuriantly with us just
now. Activities continue to
enliven our scene and we
hope you will join in with
projects now going forward
or bring some of your own.
Welcome is surely
waiting for the science
students we expect to see
on Friday, May 2, about
4:00 p.m. We are pleased
to be expecting a visit from
Mr. Parker and some of his
CHS robotics students. A
demonstration is planned
that should fascinate us all
both for the technology
involved and the innovative
things unfamiliar for some
of us who are not actual
students and have lots to
learn.
Friday afternoon’s
program will also include a
presentation by Mr. Eddie
Aguilar, an engineer who is
visiting from Weatherford.
He will have some ideas and
thoughts to present about
his profession and its many
opportunities.
Additional welcome
arrivals this week have been
an assortment of genealogy
researchers with the
different information and
the questions they always
bring. Descendants from
the E. B. Russell family
visiting from Colorado had
intriguing queries about
some family tales they
were tracking. They sought
some truths about various
individuals from far into the
past. Some questions were
about Comanche; others
lead us far afield. Tracking
down family legends and
mysteries always intrigues.
Sometimes the truth surfaces
but sometimes it does not.
Again an earlier publication
about Oakwood Cemetery
gave useful information
about something that has
since disappeared or has
been lost. What’s the point?
Remember to look forward
and back as well.
Among the visitors, we
are glad to have student
researchers from an honors
class at CHS. They are
doing assigned projects
on significant Comanche
County individuals of
yesterday. The personalities
are not necessarily from
the student’s own families.
Mrs. Griffin whose real
purpose is admittedly to
have students learn other
research techniques aside
from “you can get it all off
the Internet”. We all plan to
avoid this well known false
premise about information
sources.
Resources available at
your library are diversified.
The tips offered are good
for anyone researching local
personalities, their times, or
Comanche history topics in
general. Some have used the
Comanche Family Histories
volumes prepared in 2008
but assorted supplementary
resources are proving ever
so useful.
It is excellent to see
information spread out in
the form of transcribed
Comanche information,
cemeteries data, and volumes
of local family histories.
Personal information
from adjoining counties is
waiting in county histories
and additional data from
all the counties that touch
Comanche. Tax information,
land data, and vintage
newspapers are available
on microfilm. U.S. Census
schedules and information
from 1940 backward are
available via TexShare on
the library’s web page as
well as from the library’s
Texas microfilm schedules,
1930 back to 1850.
We have written some
about students today
but the invitation is for
everyone to take advantage
of your library’s diversified
resources. Come on now.
