Alto Texas August 22 Slnco seeing
Mr Notlls estimate of tho cotton crop for
1E091000 I can not refrain from making
a few observations upon tho same
The gentleman above quoted Is good au-
thority on all matters pertaining to cotton
statistics and especially is ho sn expert
when it comes to estimating tho amount of
tho cotton receipts for previous yearn bo
fore him Mr Nelll estimates a lurgur
crop for this year than for any previous
It to mo that a statement of
year seems
Thompson near Oenavllle Ho was given
that kind could havo but ono purpMO in
seventy years In the penitentiary on last
Monday
vlcw and that Is to keep tha price of cot
ton down Lclow tho cost of production It
la very evident from the itatlstlca now
beforo us for this yoar that the cror wJII
bo shorter than last jcar
Taking a normal year with somo con-
ditions that havo exUtcd in pr lous years
Mr Ncllls estimate might be approximate-
ly correct but this la not a normal yoar
There havo boon floods la ono part of tho
cotton belt and excessive drouths In othir
parts nnd conditions vary so much that no
human can correctly estimate tho cotton
crop
Cotton has been cut off onothlrd ln
Tsxas during1 tho past two weoks owing
to excessive drouths and hot wind
From nearly nil parts of tho South como
reports of a total or partial failure in
the cotton crop With all those facts
beforo us and ln vlow of tbo further fact
that moro lands hivo been planted In to-
bacco potatoes tomatoes watermolons
nnd other fruits than wero over planted
before It fs ovlduit to all thinking peoplo
that tbo cotton crop will bo shorter than
usual and very much shorter in Texas
Now statistics show that with tbo un-
usually largo crop of last yoar tho cotton
factories have only enough cotton on band
to run until Ortober
Theso factories can not afford to shut-
down when tho present supply is exhaust-
ed They will want the new cotton crop
and they must hae it
If the farmers wero organized and nil
agreed to hold their cotton until Novem-
ber thoy would bo sure to get 7 or 8 cents
per pound for It
They ought to have that much nnd In
fact they ralto It at a loss when thoy take
less for It
The black land farmers and those of the
large river bottoms may bo able to ralaa
It at 5 cento but East Toxas farmers can-
not do It nd thc sooner they find it out
and turn their attention to other and bet-
ter crops tho bolter It will bo for tbem
Now I would suggest that a cotton con-
vention be held at Houston Waco or Dal-
las and let representative farmers attend
said convention and discuss the conditions
and agree upon some plan by which af
least twotblrds of the crop could bo
held TJjIb would Insure tho farmers 7
cents for their cotton TbU convention
could bo called by tbo gov-
ernor or some other man In
whom all the people have confidence
Time is short and this would have to bo
done at the earliest posiible moment Ro
