Indians swat 'Jackets 14-6
By Bryan S. Friesth
On a night that made you feel
glad to be an American, a Texan
and alive in Seminole, the
Seminole Indians with poise and
confidence swatted the Kermil
Yellowjackets 14-6.
In front of a near capacity
crowd In Wigwam Stadium die
Indians amassed 223 total yards.
Quarterback Brett Blackmon was
2 of 5 passing for 17 yards and
the rushing game came from
several different Indians for a
total of 206 yards on the ground.
Seminole scored first on the
first drive of the second half.
After a defensive battle in the
first half and a scoreless game at
halftime, Seminole came out in
the second half starting their
drive on their own 43 yard line.
The Yellowjackets in attempting
to kickoff to start the second half
were penalized three times for
fifteen yards for kicking it out of
bounds three consecutive times.
Running back Darrell Hill ran
around the right end for 21 yards
on the first play from scrimmage.
Then Ricky Tercero fullback for
the Indians ran for 16 yards up
the middle. Hill got 3 more yards
up the middle to put the ball on
the 12 yard line. An illegal
procedure penalty against
Seminole moved the Indians back
to the 17 yard line. Hill then took
the hand off and rambled 16
yards to the I yard line.
Tercero tried up the middle for
the score but was stopped for no
gain.
Then with 9:21 left to go in the
third quarter Tercero took the
very next handoff and punched it
in for the first touchdown of the
night and of the 1991 season.
Josh Abshier handling the
kicking chores got the extra
point.
The drive took only 6 plays
and covered 57 yards.
The Seminole defense then
held the Yellowjackets to 3 yards
and they were forced to punt.
Seminole also stalled on their
next drive and punted.
Kermit then sustained the best
drive of the night from its own 17
yard line. The Yellowjackets ran
off eight consecutive running
Seagraves blanks
Stanton Buffs 35-0
It wasn’t even close as the
Seagraves Eagles won another
opener Friday, defeating Stanton,
35-0, before the home folks.
After assuming a 7-0 first
quarter lead, the Eagles extended
it to 21-0 at the half and then
closed out the scoring in the third
period with two more
touchdowns to complete the
shutout.
With 4:35 remaining in the
first period, fullback Kendrick
Anderson scored from one yard
out and quarterback Timmy
Cavazos kicked the extra point to
make it 7-0.
hi the second period, with
11:45 remaining, Cavazos tossed
a 17-yard pass to end Todd
Moore. The extra point try was
muffed, but holder Sam Kemper
picked up the loose ball and ran it
in for two points. Later in the
period, halfback Tony Conde
scored on an 11-yard run with
3:36 remaining, and the PAT was
missed.
The third period saw more of
the same, with Anderson scoring
his second TD of the night with
2:48 remaining and Cavazos
kicking the extra point. Conde
tallied again with two seconds to
go in the period and Cavazos
again kicked the point.
Seagraves’ defense was stout
in the contest, forcing five
turnovers, while holding the
Buffalos to a total of 199 yards,
all on the ground. Included was a
73-yard run.
The Eagles had 15 first downs
to Stanton’s 5, 230 yards rushing
and 47 through the air and lost
two fumbles.
Anderson had 15 carries for
116 yards and two touchdowns,
while Conde, who also scored
twice, had nine carries for 58
yards.
Seagraves will be at home
again this Friday, hosting Plains
at 8:00 p.m.
Longhorns lose tough
first game to Panthers
A heart-breaking loss started
out the season for the Loop
Longhorns Friday as they were
beaten by Whitharral, 26-20, in
Loop.
TTie visitors scored with just
23 seconds remaining in the
contest to seal the victory after a
tie score at the end of the third
quarter.
Loop jumped out to a 14-0
first quarter lead on a 50-yard
pass from Jesse Burrola to Alex
Vasquez and Javier Ramirez
kicked the extra point. Burrola
also scored in the quarter on a 25-
yard run, but the kick was no
good.
Whitharral came back to score
12 points in the second period,
missing both extra points.
In the third period, Whitharral
scored and made the extra point,
while Ramirez scored for Loop
on a 50-yard run, but the point
was no good.
It stayed that way until the
final 23 seconds, when
Whitharral scored the winner.
Loop had 304 total yards, 207
rushing and 97 in the air, while
Whitharral had 237 total yards,
117 on the ground and 120
passing.
Lopp lost two fumbles in the
gamq, while Whitharral lost one.
The Longhorns will attempt to
even their mark Friday at 7:30,
again at home, as they play El
Paso Jesus Chapel.

streaked into the end zone to
score Kermit’s first and only
touchdown. The extra point was
no good. The drive took 9 plays
and covered 83 yards. The score
came with :23 seconds left in the
third quarter.
Seminole then began another
drive that almost ended in a
touchdown but came under a mist
of controversy as two flags fell
on the same play. Blackmon
faded back to pass to tight end
Josh Abshier in the end zone but
it appeared Abshier was hit in the
back before the ball got to him,
the flag was thrown, and
somehow the ball popped off a
few players and a Yellowjacket
player came up with it running it
out of the end zone. After being
tackled an unsportsmanlike
conduct flag was thrown against
the Indians. To say the least this
caused much confusion and took
a solid 5 minutes for the referees
to figure it all out. The ruling
finally was that the ball had been
tipped by a Kermit player thus
disregarding the interference call
against Abshier.
The unsportsmanlike conduct
penalty held up for the
Yellowjackets and they look over
possession at their own 19 yard
line.
The Indian defense once again
rose to the occasion with slops by
Stack Franklin and Brett
Blackmon, to force Kermit to
punt.
Then after trading punts once
again the Seminole Indians took
the ball on their own 21 yard line
with under 2 minutes to play in
the game. A drive alternately
using Hill and Tercero finally
ended as Hill ran it around the
wide side for the touchdown with
:!3 seconds left to go in the
game Ahshicr’s kick was good
and the Indian’s led 14-6.
The kickoff was a short squib
on the ground and then the
defense held the Yellowjackets
on two subsequent passing
attempts.
Final score Seminole 14,
Kermit 6.
The Seminole defense held the
Yellowjackets to only 96 yards
rushing, basically coming on one
drive. And only 98 yards passing,
basically coming on two long
passes.
Both teams had unsuccessful
attempts at field goals in the first
half.
Other rushers for Seminole
included Daniel Kelly 4 carries
for 24 yards, Bryan Conyers 3
carries for 16 yards, Brett
Blackmon 5 carries for 0 yards.
Hill had 77 yards on 14 carries
and Tercero was just slightly
ahead with 78 yards on 13 carries
for an average of 6 yards per
carry.
All in all the Indians looked °n a ni8hl lhal was set aside to
