again. Joe Imke, chairman of
of the Lipscomb Soil Conser-
vation Board, has announced
the annual LipscombDistrict’
sponsored “save the soil and
Save Texas" essay contest.
The subject this year is
“Conservation-A way £ Life!'

BUDGET ITEMS AFFECTING ALL DISTRICTS
The Federal agricultural budget regarding conservation and resource development for the
coming year generally breaks down like this. The ACP program would have a cut of $100
million—1964 authorization—down to $150 million.
Soil and Water Conservation Districts would get an increase of $825,000 for assistance
to 30 new districts and $1,072,500 for work in old districts.
Soil surveys would be scheduled an additional $443,000—also $132,000 for
cooperative soil survey work in urban areas. Increased pay and postal costs for employees
amount to $5,302,000IT for conservation operations for the SCS .
Great Plains programs receive $2,150,000. $2million for the watershed program—primarily
river basin planning.
$6,275,000 is provided for the SCS for resource conservation and Development projects.
There are also increases for research on land management.
The budget provides $27million to the ASCS for 1963 and 1964 for payments in pilot
projects to convert land used for crops to a conservation or recreationakuse and to make
payments on Conservation Reserve Jand contracts extended for one year. USDA programs
are broke down as follows:
