Body Of ChRi'st
In the spring of 1519, Alonzo Alvarez de Pineda left Florida
in search of a direct route to India. He followed the coast of
the Gulf of Mexico, mapping the rivers and bays.
On +he Feast of Corpus Christi, a day on which we pay
special honor to the "Body of Christ" in the Blessed
Sacrament, tradition has it that the explorer arrived at a
large body of water. According to Spanish custom, he nam. d
it after the Feast — Corpus Christi Bay.
The -ity which took .ts name from the bay must have
impressed St Pius X, the Pope of the Holy Eucharist In 1912,
he made the city of Corpus Christi the seat of a D ocese -
thus giving reason for his successor, Pius XII, to proclaim it
"the Diocese with the most beautiful name in the world."
Every year, on the Feast of Corpus Christi, the people of
the Diocese express their special devotion with processions,
Holy Hours of Adoration and special Masses and prayers.
This year, on the Feast of Corpus Christi the Bishop and
parishioners from all parts of the Diocese will gather at 4105
Ocean Drive for the dedication of the Blessed Sacrament
Chapel of Perpetual Adoration, where every day of the year
will be a little Feast of Corpus Christi.
