Father Boos Retires
As Pastor in Bishop
On the first day of Sep-
tember of 1969, Father
Jerome M. Boos retired as
Pastor of St. James’
Church in Bishop, Tex.
He was born June 18,
1897, in Munich, Germany,
the son of Mr. Maximilian
Boos and Mrs. Elizabeth
Schmid Boos. He has three
brothers, Frank, Adolph
and William Boos, all in
New York City.
He attended elementary
school at Munich and the
minor seminary in Bel-
gium and France. After his
philosophical and theologi-
cal studies in St- Odile’s
College and the University
Fr. Boos
of Munich, he was or-
dained deacon by Cardinal
Faulhaber in 1924, and
priest in 1925, by Bishop
Maximilian Lingge, he
celebrated his first Mass at
St. Margaret’s church, his
home parish, in Munich.
AFTER SEVEN years
missionary work in
Venezuela, he returned in
1933 to Germany. After
the take over by Hitler he
came to the United States
with his widowed mother.
Incardinated into the
Corpus Christi Diocese in
the spring cf 1935, he
served as Assistant at the
Sacred Heart Church in
Corpus Christi, Adminis-
trator of St. Martin’s in
Kingsville and on Nov. 2,
1938, he was appointed
Pastor of the newly found-
ed parish of St. James,
Bishop, Tex.
Father Boos went regu-
larly for many years to
Laureles Ranch and Dris-
coll to celebrate Mass,
teach catechism, baptize,
and perform marriages,
and officiate at funerals.
Living among the poor,
he was well aware of their
needs and kept in touch
with all those able to help
officially or privately.

Liturgy Conference
Criticized by Minister
By Father Donald Ranly,
C.PP.S.
Milwaukee — The Litur-
gical Conference’s thrust
into the secular world of
controversial social prob-
lems and its emphasis on
new forms of worship came
under expected heavy fire
at the business meeting of
the conference’s 1969 con*
vention here Aug. 27.
The most scathing criti-
cism came from the Rev.
Theo Delaney of St. Louis,
a minister of the Lutheran
Church — Missouri Synod,
who has been a member of
the conference for three
years. He referred to the
conference’s opening night
paraKturgical service as
having much to do with
man, but little to do with
God.
The multi-media experi-
ence, held Aug. 25, fea-
tured bread as the central'
image. Bread was distrib-
uted during the celebration
as a symbol of life and
hope. The Reverend Dela-
ney charged that God had
been dragged in by a
Scripture reading which
didn’t fit, and that distri-
bution of bread at the ser-
vice was a sacrilegious
parody of the Eucharist.
Although relatively few
conference members at-
tended the business meet-
ing, many applauded the
Reverend Delaney’s state-
ments.
Father Joseph Connolly,
president of the conference,
stated afterwards in an
interview that the attacks
on the convention did not
at all surprise him.
He said the only word in
the Reverend Delaney’s
charges which made him
wince was the word
"sacrilegious.”
Father Qonnolly said
that Jesus fed the 5,000
with bread and even re-
ferred to the fact that the
people came back to Him
because He had fed them.
Christ had used the bread
as a teaching device.

fore God’s throne in
heaven, we pray to the

may be united to form one
Christian community, we

Brethren Churches
Moderator Named
Winona Lake, Ind. —
The Rev. Wesley Haller,
Johnstown, Pa., was chosen
moderator of the National
Fellowship of Brethren
Churches at the denomi-
nation’s annual conference
held here. He will serve
for one year.
They heard reports that
national membership of the
denomination reached a
record 31,727 in 1968, an
increase of 3% over 1967.
Sunday school enrollment
rose above 41,000 for the
first time.
an outstanding Shamrock
is selected based on her re-
cord for the past year.
Such things considered are
dependability, cheerful atti-
tude, eagerness to learn all
phases of hospital work,
neatness of appearance,
responsiveness and attend-
ance.
The competition among
the girls is very keen and
it is a difficult task to
come up with a winner.
The "Shamrock of the
Year” is judged by the
Shamrock chairman and
two junior officers.
Pope Receives
U.S. Officials
Castelgandolfo — Pope
Paul VI received in private
audiences U.S. Ambassador
C. Clyde Ferguson, Presi-
dent Nixon’s special inves-
tigator of Nigerian relief;
Sen. Charles E. Goodell of
New York, Cardinal Carlo
Confalonieri, prefect of the
Congregation for Bishops,
and Archbishop Angelo
Felici, pro nuncio to Hol-
land.
Is Clarified
Vatican City — The Va-
tican City daily, clarifying
its own clarification, has
stated that when it wrote
that Pope Paul VI had
received no official invita-
tion to visit Japan, it
meant that he had re-
ceived no invitation to vis-
it the atom-bombed city of
Hiroshima.
This clarification followed
upon a visit to the papal
secretariat of state by Jap-
anese ambassador to the
Holy See Yukihisa Tam-
ura, who pointed out that
he himself had delivered
an official invitation of the
Japanese government.
This invitation, dating
from May, invited Pope
Paul to visit Japan on the
occasion of next year’s in-
ternational exhibition in
Osaka.
The newspaper had writ-
ten of the lack of an offi-
cial invitation to Japan
two days earlier.
A Vatican source com-
mented that a world’s fair
is not as suitable a goal
for a papal pilgrimage as
is Hiroshima, which he
said can be regarded as "a
peace center.”
It is estimated that from
80,000 to more than 200,-
000 persons died either in
the blast or from after-ef-
fects of the atom-bombing
of Hiroshima on Aug. 6,
1945.
