Quite a ttir was created last Sun-
day morning when a certain old
sinner was seen slipping into
church Surely something was go
ing to happen or the o s must
have thought that it was time for
hi in to think of things more serious
At the night service the same o s
was seen eraercing from the dark-
ness accompanied by the hand-
somest lady in ail the land There
was no excitement in the church
because this o was bo unaccus-
tomed to the hours when the eve-
ning service began he was consid
prably ahead of time As the cor
gregation began to assemble many
would glance at the o s with a
kind of why really The o b
had his eyes doing duty alBu and
noticed the absence of many that
he had heardbelonged to the fold
He could but tbink how the night

much damper a church is than a

would aptly Bpply to some of them
then perhaps churches nould not
be so damp at night and absentee

THE aUESTION
The politics of New York and
Texas are more prominent to day
than in any of the state in which
elections are to be held this fall
This is made so by the fight made
on Senator Bailey and the nomi
nation of Mr Hearst for Governor
of New York on the democratic
ticket Mr Bryan the most con
spicous candidate for psesidentyet
named is supporting Mr Heartt
Senator Bailey is prominent in the
party yet he is openly charging
that all his present troubles is
caused by his being knifed by
Hearst Is this knifing caused by
Hearst fearing Baileys presiden-
tial ambition may in the near fu-
ture conflict with his Should Mr
Hearst carry New York it gives
him a strong fighting chance for at
least the second place Bryan
government ownership of railroads
ideas will not when the rub coiner
carry from him the presidentitl
nomination because the people
will know that unless congress fa-
vors the plannothing can be dooe
Everyone admits Bryan i a great
favorite with the people the ypo
manry It is just here where the
conflict begins Every one knows
Bailey has no love for Hearst and
no great amount for Bryan now
suppose these two should head the
next national tlemocratic ticket in
what part of the political field can
Senator Bailey consistently play
How can he support Hearst Wiu
he Bupport Bryan It would ap-
pear to the thoughtful that no
matter which way the Texa pnlit
cal fight ends if Bryan and Hearnt
leads the national democratic lick
et Senator Bailey will find himsef
in the most unpleasant political p
sition of any prominent poititiau
now before the people Shonl
Nebraska and New York furnish
the nominees tor the democratic
party in the coming presidential
campaign Senator Bailey will not
be in position to render the party
any service judcing from his aaeu
eation against Hearst It is very
evident that all these complications
will eventually work to the detri
ment of the democratic party in
the next presidential campaign It
is beyond question that the fight
now on in Texas is going to be
more far reaching than perhaps
the free silver question in the elate
That the party is divided on the
Bailey question there is no doubt
It is also foregone conclusion that
either congress or the nest legisla
ture will pass a law to cover the
case now agitating the people It
is more than likely not only the
Texas legislature but all other
6tates which have no laws covering
such cases will insist on the pass-
age of such a law which will for-
ever prevent such unhappy agita-
tion within the party any more
It is a consumation devoutely to
be wished
Indications now strongly point
to the election of Mr Hearst in
New York The government own
erehip of rail raads is not the ghost
it wag thought when Mr Bryan
first suggested it It is now con
ceded to be a fict that on the
south will depend the great task of
defeating it in the next national
democratic convention The south
only fears it because of Its tenden-
cy to centralization yet our popi
listic friends of the south notwith
standing they have returned to the
democratic parly would doubtless
cling to it as being original with
that party only prematurely
launched This would naturally
embarrass the party a division
a fiaht within itself a houee di
vided cant stand

dill I T Democrat plant was
