SSCA for teenagers set
The Summer School of the Christian
Apostolate, an annual week-bn g program for
teenagers, will be held at Corpus Christi’s Ex-
position Hall from Monday, May 31st to Friday,
June 4th.
The SSCA program will be offered here for the
seventeenth consecutive summer according to
Father Mark Chamberlin, Diocesan Youth
Director. The SSCA is a program featuring
talks, discussions, group activities, liturgy and
various social events. Father Chamberlin noted
that the program is designed to help young peo-
ple develop their knowledge of Christ and
themselves, and to see their role as young Chris-
tians in today’s society. “The title makes the
program sound a bit grim, but actually it’s a fast-
paced and enjoyable week. In the past few years,
more than four hundred young people have at-
tended each SSCA,” Father Chamberlin said.
Tuition for the week is $15.00 which includes
all talks and social activities. It does not include
meals. Many young people take sack lunches and
eat along the bayfront during the break.
Each parish in the diocese has several scholar-
ships available for deserving teenagers. These
scholarships will be distributed by the pastors.
Father Chamberlin said that preparations for
the SSCA are being handled by a staff of
teenagers who are responsible for all publicity,
scheduling and arrangements. The program is
being coordinated by Miss Anna Lewis. Staff
members include Father Jack Campbell, S.J., of
St. Louis; Father James Patton from the Diocese
of Cleveland; Father Dominic Pistone, St. Am-
brose Church in Houston. Local staff members
include Father Chamberlin, Father Roger Smith
of Corpus Christi Minor Seminary, Fathers
Michael Howell and James Tamayo of the
Cathedral, Sister Jude Janectk, Diocesan Youth
Minister, and Mr. Bill Ehrhardt from Sts. Cyril
Sc Methodius parish.
More information may be obtained by contac-
ting the Catholic Youth Office in Corpus Christ*
at 888-5132 or by calling Father Chanberiin at

VESS volunteers saluted
During National Volunteer
Week, April 18-24, members of
Volunteers for Educational and
Social Services (VESS) are be-
ing saluted for their dedicated
services to the various
ministries of the Church
throughout Texas.
In the Diocese of Corpus
Christi, VESS volunteers work
at St. Anthony’s School in
Robstown. “VESS is a group
of wonderful people who love
and care for others and are con-
cerned about their education as
well as their social and
economical needs,” said Sister
Maxi Cruz, the school’s prin-
cipal. “I hope and pray that
God will keep on blessing us
with these wonderful people.”
Founded in 1972, VESS is
the Christian service organiza-
tion of the Texas Catholic Con
ference that helps staff Catholic
schools, parishes and social ser-
vice agencies throughout the
state.
For $100 a month, room,
board and other benefits, VESS
volunteers work in full-time
professional jobs as teachers,
campus ministers, social
workers and others. It has been
described as the “Catholic
VISTA” in Texas, noted Ms.
Bertha Lcpez Paskos, VESS
public information coordinator,
stressing that its Christian
perspective and lifestyle makes
the biggest difference.
“The goads of VESS are to
serve where the need is the
greatest and to bring Christ to
all thev come in contact with,”
said Sister M. Therese Janke,
principal at Immaculate Con-
ception School in Brownsville
where five of her teachers are
VESS volunteers.
“VESS volunteers’ influence
on those they work with lasts
forever,” Sister Janke con-
tinued, “Our students have ex-
perienced some of the happiest
moments of their lives through
the influence of VESS
teachers.”
Presently, there are 110
volunteers in VESS serving in
ten of the eleven dioceses that
make up the Texas Catholic
Conference. The majority of
them come from the East and
Midwest part of the country.
Over half of the volunteers stay
in Texas for two or more years
with VESS.
Fred Walker of Willmington,
North Carolina, is a VESS
volunteer who has worked as a
teacher at Our Lady of Victory
School, San Antonio, for five
years. “My concern is the
presence of the Church in the
Black community,” he said.
Our Lady of Victory School is
the only school in the Ar-
chdiocese of San Antonio whose
enrollment is 95 percent Black.
“Although the majority of the
children here are not Catholic,
it is important that our
presence be kept alive here.
The parents want a good
education for their children,”
Walker said.
Since 1975, VESS has also
provided social workers to
parishes and agencies. Father

workers he has had in the past,
“Their effect has been signifi-
cant. Our parish family has a
lot of responsibilities to the
community and the VESC
social workers have helped us
become more involved in social
Issues and have directly helped
people with their personal
needs. We’re thankful for
that.”
Established in the early ’70’s,
National Volunteer Week is
recognized nationally by a
message from the president and
locally by proclamations by a
number of governors and city
officials. The week serves not
only to focus public attention
on the contributions of a wid-
variety of volunteers, but to
publicly thank them for the,,
contributions and to encourage
all citizens to become more ac-
