Flying high
Father Jose Gutierrez,
pastor of Our Lady of the Holy
Rosary for the past three years
left the diocese Sept. 1 for a
tour of duty as an Air Force
Chaplain. Father Gutierrez
entered the Air Force as a 1st
Lieutenant and has been sta-
tioned at Lackland AFB in San
Antonio. A native of Mathis,
Father Gutierrez was ordained
by Bishop Thomas Drury in
1976.
Learning the law
With the new Code of Canon
Law expected to be pro-
mulgated by Pope John Paul II
this year, priests throughout the
country are attending intensive
courses on the subject. Six
priests from the Corpus Christi
diocese recently attended
seminars ;n San Antonio and
Nv*v Orleans sponsored by the
Canon Law Society. They are

Reelected
Corpus Christi attorney
Alfred Nicolas was elected to a
second term as a Supreme
Director of the Knights of Col-
umbus at their Centennial con-
vention last month in Hartford,
Connecticut. A Past State

Nicolas is a member of Council
1202 in Corpus Christi.
Spanish visitor
Mother Dolores Domingo,
the foundress of the Missionary
Sisters of Jesus, Mary and
Joseph has been visiting South
Texas since mid-August. She
wil! participate in the Sept. 12
blessing of the new convent at
the Sisters’ Mt. Tabor center in
Calallen. Mother Dolores
funded the order in Spain in
1936..-
Msgr. Shirley
a leader
Msgr. Richard Shirley,
Chancellor of the Corpus
Christi diocese and pastor of
the Cathedral parish, has been
selected to take part in the
Leadership Corpus Christi pro-
gram sponsored by the
Chamber of Commerce. Msgr.
Shirley is the first priest ever
selected for the nine-month
long program which is designed
to identify and motivate emerg-
ing leaders and develop their
potential for community leader-
ship.
New principals
Three Catholic schools in the
diocese have new principals.
They are Sister Maria Teresa
De Llano at Laredo's Ursuline
Elementary, Sister Ansclma
Till at Our Lady of Victory in
Beeville, and Mr. Michael
Trudeau at Corpus Christi
Minor Seminary.
Tribunal officer
Father Leonard Pivonka
has been named Vice-officialis
of the Corpus Christi Diocesan
Tribunal. The Beeville native
recently returned to the diocese
after a course of study at the
Catholic University of
America. Fathei Pivonka has
completed all work toward a
doctorate in Canon Law and is
awaiting the conferring of the
degree from the Washington,
D.C. school. He is also
teaching theology this fail at
Corpus Christi Minor
Seminary.
