Third Sunday of Easter
32 arrests made
Holy Week rescues
defend the unborn

CORPUS CHRIST!—As the faithful observed Holy
Week in their worshipping communities, Body of Christ
Rescue, a local pro-life organization, “remembered the
trail of Jesus” by holding four peaceful demonstrations at
two local abortion clinics which resulted in 32 arrests.
On the morning of March 26 “rescuers” joined in prayer
as they blocked the three enhances of Reproductive Serv-
ices, 5315 Everhart, and attempted to offer abortion alter-
natives to clients. A similar rescue was held later thst day
at New Women’s Clinic on Home Road.
Among the 24 people arrested for criminal trespass or
obstructing a passageway was Father James Harris, pastor
of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Alice. After being
taken into custody, he end the others were released the
same day. Father Harr, s was found guilty of criminal
trespass earlier in the month for attempting to counsel a
woman in her car during a Sept. 29, 1990, rescue.
The priest* who was fined 5200 plus court costs for his
first arrest, opted for community service work at Corpus
Christi Metro Ministries in lieu of his fine.
Father Harris led Good Friday “prayer supporters” in the
Passion of Jesus off the property of Reproductive Sconces
while three other groups prayed and sang as they blocked
the three entrances to the clinic.
When reflecting on the “choice” the crowd had to make = ;|
between Jesus and Barabbas, Father Harris noted that the 5
word “choice” was misunderstood then as it is now. “In this
city we worship choice bul don’t understand its meaning...the
only choice is to chocsc God,”
About 10 rescuers walked onto the property mid-way
through the five-hour rescue and knelt in from of a group

BEEVILLE-Ruben Contreras usually played tailback
for the Beeville Trojans high school football team bul Tate
dealt him a nasty blow when he found himself playing
against Calallcn’s goal line defense about a year and a half
ago. A neck injury not only sidelined the 17-year-old
junior but paralyzed his legs and arms, confining him to a
wheelchair.
The income brought in by Ruben’s father, Jesus Centre-
ibs, a waier wdi worker, was barely enough to cover initial
medical costs, Now, a wheelchair-bound son meant their
home would have to undergo some expensive remodeling
to accommodate i.im. Where would the money come
from?
That question will never haunt the Contreras family
again. Thanks to the efforts of the Pax Christi Institute, a
religious order of nuns founded by Mother Teresa Santoyc,
Ruben and his family now live In a bigger home built with
accomodations for a wheelchair. Mother Samoyo deeded
the house to the Centre; nses.at a special dedication cere-
mony here March 39. ..
Bee Wile Mayor John Ibafiez was one of the invited
guests at the dedication, “This is certainly a very special / ;j | g_
occasion, .the whole community has been behind this ..
young man and this is probably the happiest day
life ”h« said. SwPaxChHsfi(IMge7
