STEP for seniors
-by City Manager Joyce Pulich
When the crowds roll in
When the crowds roll in next year so will the money that
will pay for beach maintenance. The Texas Attorney Gen-
eral’s Office will issue a letter saying it does not object to
the recently-passed beach parking ordinance allowing the
city to charge $5 per year for beach parking. The fee is
designed to take the burden of funding beach mainte-
nance off the Port Aransas tax payers and into the hands of
the people who use the beach. Port Aransas Mayor Dale
Bietendorf said the beach parking fee will help Port Aransas
better utilize its tax dollars by not having to pour about 20
percent of the ad valorem tax revenues into beach mainte-
nance. See story for details. (Staff photo)

The Senior Texas Employment
Program is an excellent source of
extra help at the public works
department. Eligible applicants
must be 55 years of age or older,
meet income guidelines, and pass a
physical examination.
Once approved for placement,
the participant is paid the min-
imum wage for up to 16 hours per
week of work by STEP with state
funds. The City supervises and
counsels the participant and han-
dles administration of the program.
Howard Brown, our first STEP
participant, works Saturdays and
Sundays as attendent at the resi-
dential collection station. Mr. Brown
has proven to be an excellent and
conscientious worker in his months
at this job.
Les Hill has recently been quali-
fied as a STEP participant. He will
spend his 16 hours picking up litter
on public rights-of-way, concentrat-
ing on the pmr areas. The program
has been successful and demand
has exceeded the two available
slots so we are requesting addi-
tional slots at this time.
City Hall will be losing a dedi-
cated employee when Tricia Ange-
lori and her husband Frank move
In addition to handling purchase
orders, purchasing and routine
clerical matters, she assumed the
task of typing massive amounts of
correspondence, minutes and re-
ports generated by the Coastal
Bend Beach Task Force. She is
always at least 30 minutes early to
work and is willing to stay late
when needed. We regret losing her
but wish her well in her new home.
