VESS kicks off its 17th year of service to the Church
CORPUS CHRISTI—For the 17th year,
Volunteers for Educational and Social Services
(VESS) will be working in parishes, schools and
other Church centers throughout the state and in the
Diocese of Corpus Christi.
Eighty-two VESS volunteers have staffed 10 dif-
ferent diocesan schools, agencies and parishes since
the organization was founded by the Texas bishops in
1972, Statewide, over 870 volunteers have con-
tributed their talents to Church-affiliated programs
since that time,
Our Lady of the Pillar Church in Corpus Christi,
Our Lady of Victory School in Beeville, Sacred
Heart School in Rockport and St, Anthony School in
Robstown are among the places in which VESS
volunteers have served,
St. Anthony School is a good example of VESS fill-
ing the gap where there has been a shortage of
teachers. Last year, St. Anthony’;; had six teachers
on staff. Four VESS volunteers were placed there to
teach and three of those are returning for another
year, demonstrating their level of commitment.
Bernadine Hettinger, a retired classroom teacher
with more than 30 years of experience, taught in the
4th grade at St, Anthony’s last year, and has return-
ed to teach computer classes to all of the grades. Most
recently from Champaign, 111., Ms. Hettinger is also
active in several Catholic organizations.
Mike O’Connor is the returning physical educa-
tion teacher at the Robstown school, A graduate of
Central Missouri State University, O’Connor
coaches baseball, basketball and girls’ volleyball and
he teaches tennis.
Originally from Nigeria, Moji Adeeko has been a
VESS volunteer and taught at St. Anthony’s since
1985, She has a bachelor’s degree in elementary
education and a master’s degree in educational ad-
ministration. She is teaching kindergarten this year
and she and her husband, Gbenga, also help with
Pre-Cana classes at the parish.
Andrea Langeland teaches the fifth and sixth
grades there, A native of Spokane, Wash,, and a
graduate of Pacific Lutheran University, Mr,,
Langeland has volunteered in inner-city youth pro-
grams and other programs.
Tabulating the number of hours VESS volunteers
have contributed over the years, it is estimated that
their work has saved Church entities about $20.5
million, primarily through education.

Where’s
the Smile?
It’s just beneath the frown,
waiting to be coaxed forth by
a friendly word. Children are
an important element of our
apostolate in parishes, missions,
schools and hospitals, They are
the future of our work:. Perhaps
you would like to make them part
of your world as a Priest or
Brother in our community.
