ARMYWORMS IN ARCHER
COUNTY
The past couple of days I
have had a large number of
calls into the Extension Office
on army worms. These worms
are causing large scale damage
to recently planted wheat and
stripping pastures of late season
growth.
This year's army worms
problems come from the recent
wet weather that we had last
month. This increase in rain
after a drought brings on large
numbers for these worms. Fall
armyworms pose a larger
problem to landowners because
of the blending together of
several generations and appear
as a continually occurring
population. The first hard
freeze will naturally break this
life cycle. Archer County
average first freeze date is
October 31st.
DESCRIPTION:
There are four common
species of armyworms in
Texas: the fall army worm, the
yellowstripped army worm, the
beet armyworm and the
armyworm. They all have
slightly different morphology.
The fall armyworm will have a
inverted "Y" between its eyes

and will also have four large spots
on the last segment of its body.
They are stripped and range in
color from yellowish-gray to
greenish-gray depending on the
diet and conditions.
There are four life stages: egg,
larva, pupa and adult. Eggs are
very small, white in color and are
laid in clusters of 50 to 100. They
are covered in fuzzy, gray scales
and are laid at the base of host
plants. Lush plant growth is
preferred by the adults. Larvae
(caterpillars) are very small when
they emerge from the egg, larvae
will feed for 2-3 weeks and can
grow to be 1 to 1.5 inches long.
The larvae have 5 stages of
molting to produce pupal stage.
Adult moths emerge from the
pupae stage. Moths then mate to
start the cycle over again.
When feeding, larvae strip
foliage and then move on, this is
were the name armyworm comes
from. High populations of
armyworms appear to "march"
side by side to find new food.
The damage from armyworms is
the way they eat. They defoliate
the plant leaf area. The small
larvae will chew the green from
leaves leaving a "window pane"
effect. The first three stages of
molting do not cause much
damage because they can not eat
very much, however the last two
stages (when the armyworm is 3/
4 inch in length and longer) the
worm will consume 85% of their
total intake.
TREATMENT:
Fall armyworms feed
throughout the day, but they are
most active during the early
morning and late evening hours.
Fields should be scouted many

times throughout the day to
detect a problem in the early
molting stages. Scouting should
occur around the perimeter as
well as the center of the field.
Sometimes a treatment around
the edges of the field will control
this pest. The threshold level
(level at which the cost of the
treatment will be less than the
loss of an untreated crop) for a
recently planted small grains
range from 2 to 3 armyworms
per square feet. Lawns and
pasture limits are 4 armyworms
per square foot. Three
armyworms per square foot, for
example, can consume 30% of
the leaf area of a good stand of

Bermuda grass. If a large
number of worms are found in a
square foot, then an immediate
treatment with an insecticide is
the best course of action.
Insecticide selection choices
vary with the effected crop. In
small grain crops: Mustang
MAX EC at a rate of 4.0 fl. oz/
acre is the best choice. The
restriction period is 0 days for
forage and hay and 7 days for
seed. Mustang MAX EC must be
mixed with a surfactant at a rate
of 8 oz to 12 oz per 100 gallons of
mix. This will ensure delivery of
the product to the pest. For range

Telephone Assistance Programs
for Low-Income Consumers
LIFELINE
Every person in America should have access to quality
affordable telecommunications service. This principle of
"Universal Service" has been the goat of the telecommu-
nications industry for decades. Brazos Telephone offers
home telephone assistance programs. These programs,
referred to as Link Up and Lifeline, help eligible people
establish and maintain telephone service.
Link Up is a program designed to offer eligible cus-
tomers a reduction in installation charges for telephone
service equal to one half of the service connection
charges or $30.00 whichever is less.
Lifeline service is a program designed to make
telephone service available at reduced rates to eligible
residential customers. An individual is eligible if he or
she participates in one of the following programs:
•Medicaid
•Food Stamps
•Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
•Federal Public Housing Assistance (FPHA)
•Health Benefits Coverage under the state Children's
Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
♦National School Lunch Free Lunch Program
In addition, you may be eligible if your household
income is at or below 150% of the federal poverty
guidelines or in your household resides a person
who receives or has a child who receives benefits
from at least one of the above-mentioned programs.

RE-ELECT
YOIJR SHERIFF
ED
DANIELS
I have 39 years law enforcement service, all of which were
as a licensed peace officer. I hold a Master's Certificate in law
enforcement issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement
Officers Standards and Education. This is the highest certificate
available in Texas. I was a Texas Highway Patrolman, then pro-
moted to the DPS Criminal Intelligence Service. I retired in 1995
as a Sergeant with the Intelligence Service.
The day after retirement I went to work for the Archer
County Sheriffs Office as Chief Deputy. I resigned to run for
Sheriff of Archer County and was defeated by Melvin Brown. I was
then appointed as a Special Texas Ranger by the director of the
DPS. I resigned to be a Deputy for Clay County until I was elected
as Sheriff of Archer County, a position I have held for the last 8
years.
I have faithfully served the citizens of Archer County in a
professional manner, working both nights and days to make Archer
County a safer place for everyone. I have experience in all areas of
law enforcement including investigating all crimes from misde-
meanor thefts, gambling, prostitution, gang activity, bank robberies,
and murder. I have assisted in capital murder cases where the
suspect received the death penalty and was executed for his crimes.
I want to continue serving the citizens of Archer County as
your Sheriff. I will continue to serve in a professional manner to
make Archer County a safe place for you, your families, and
friends.
I would appreciate your vote.
