The U.S. Department of

will conduct a Request for
Referendum Dec. 8, 2008,
through Jan. 2, 2009, among

products. This process will
determine if producers want a

commonly known as the Pork
Checkoff Program.
Participation is voluntary, and
only individuals who desire a
referendum on the Pork
Checkoff Program should
submit a request.
USDA will only conduct a
referendum on the order if at
least 15 percent of the total
number of eligible pork
producers and importers request
a referendum. The total number
of producers and importers
eligible to participate in the
Request for Referendum is
approximately 69,446;
therefore, at least 10,417 eligible
producers and importers must
request a referendum. If
necessary, the referendum will
be conducted within one year
after the results of the Request
for Referendum are announced.
If results of the Request for
Referendum indicate that a
referendum is not supported, a
referendum would not be
conducted.

were engaged in pork production
or in the importation of hogs,
pigs, pork, or pork products
between Jan. 1, 2007, and Dec.
31, 2007, and were at least 18

31, 2007, are eligible to
participate.
For producers, the Request for
Referendum will be conducted
at the USDA County Farm
Service Agency (FSA) offices
where their administrative farm
records are maintained. For
producers not participating in
FSA programs, the opportunity
to participate will be provided at
the County FSA office where
the person owns or rents land.

Christmas on the Square brings crowds
Archer County kicked off the
Christmas season last Saturday
with Christmas on the Square.
The late afternoon event for the
entire county hosted several ven-
dors, with everything from
homemade jewelry to home-
made candy, Christmas music
performed by the Archer City
Junior High and High School
bands, and, of course, Santa. The
jolly elf arrived in style via an
Archer City fire truck. The
weather was fine for the evening.
Wildcats lose to Albany 14-7 in State Quarterfinal
Controversial turnover gives Lions the edge
by Jerry Phillips
The Archer City Wildcat
perfect season came to an end
last Friday night in Mineral
Wells as the defensive-minded
Albany Lions broke a third
quarter tie after a
controversial Archer
turnover. The game
was a titanic
defensive struggle
with both teams
showing why they
were undefeated. In
the end the game
would turn on 3 big
plays. Unfortunately
for the Wildcats the
big plays were 2-1 in
favor of the Lions.
Archer City won
the toss and deferred
to the second half.
Albany was stuffed
on the 15 yard line
by Brandon Stovall
who charged down
on kick coverage and
delivered a bruising
blow to the Lion
return man. After on
offside penalty moved the ball
to the Albany 20 yard line Elijah
Hudson rushed the opening play
from scrimmage 80 yards for a
touchdown, T ay lor Riley kicked
the point after, and with only 39
seconds expired in the contest
Albany had a 7-0 lead. The play
would be the last Alley Cat
breakdown of the evening, but
spotting a good team 7 points
early ultimately proved
disastrous for the Cats. It would
be the first of three big plays.
The second big play was
Archer's return of the ensuing
kickoff. Super Seven Sam Smith
fielded the kickoff on about the
15 yard line, picked up a block
or two and sprinted down the
hometown sideline to the Albany
18 yard line. It would take 5
plays for the Wildcats to score
as Patrick "Playfake" Dayton
rolled right and found Sam
McCord in the end zone for a six
yard touchdown pass. Dillon
Bivins made good on the point
after to tie the score at 7-7.
Unfortunately one of those 5
plays was a pitch out around left
end to Smith who went airborne
and was flipped on his head
causing a neck injury. As Super
Sam was being ministered to on
the field a complete hush fell
over the stadium. The silence
was mainly a concern for the
young man's safety, but was also
a concern about how the Cats
would fare without him. A
collective sigh of relief went up
from the Archer City side when
he walked off the field, but, as
courageously as he played for
the remainder of the game, he
was hampered by the injury.
Landon Rowe would come up
with a sack just before the end of
the first half to stop a Lion drive
that got to the AC 29 yard line,
but, all in all, the first half was a
heavy weight boxing match
between two great defenses. The
powerhouse Wildcat rushing
game adjusted and started
throwing and the Lion
powerhouse rushing unit kept
feeding Hudson the ball with
some limited success.
The third big play, and
ultimately the play that turned
the game in the Lions favor, was
a controversial turnover.
Dayton, forced to throw more
than usual, threw a perfect strike
to Jeremy Beesinger late in the
third quarter. Beesinger caught
the pass and was hit from behind
with his forward progress
apparently stopped, but instead
the Lion defender slapped the
ball out, and Jason Brothers
scooped the ball up and darted
down the sideline to the Wildcat
2 yard line.
Coach Steve Smith said, "I
know he was stopped. The whole
game didn't come down to one
play, but it is tough when you
get this far and you work this
hard and something like that
happens."
Sam Smith kept him from
scoring, but one play later
Albany would score, kick the
extra point and take a 14-7 lead.
The lead held up despite some
classy offensive trickery by the
Wildcats late in the game.
Albany attempted to put the
game out of reach with a 35 yard
field goal attempt that
hit the upright and
bounced to the right,
no good, with 2
minutes left in the
contest. The Wildcats,
in this do or die
situation, on their own
20 yard line, executed
what was almost the
fourth big play of the
game as Dayton threw
a pass to Smith on a
hook pattern, who
pitched the ball to a
crossing Beesinger
who took off for the
end zone. The Lions
were able to run him
down on the Albany
41 yard line and time
would run out on the
Cats before they could
even the score.
Fifteen Wildcats
played their last high school
football game that night. These
men will graduate in the spring:
Dillon Bivins, Ty Campbell,
Bryan Mooney, Sam Smith, Sam
McCord, Tanner Aldridge,
William Sherrill, Jan Severa,
Jeremy Beesinger, Russell
Heineken, Braden Stovall, Jesse
Staley, Brady Cowan, Ben
Tucker, and Kolby Rowe.
The Wildcat football team, the
ever present Bleacher Creachers,
the Prowlin' Growlin' Wildcat
Band, the Moms and Dads and
the fans, young and old, were
obviously devastated by the loss,
and with courageous hearts
broken, filed out of the stadium
for the trip home. Many doubted
if the sun would ever shine again.
Such is the emotional impact of
young men who put everything
on the line for themselves and
the community, but a few hours
later the sun did come up in
Archer County to reveal a terrific
body of work by a tough and
talented bunch of football
players. Not all was well in
Mineral Wells, but all is well in
Archer City, thanks to the work
of a fine group of young men.
This 2008 Wildcat football team
will be remembered in Archer
City for a long time. Thanks to
all the players and coaches for a
great season. Your motto "Do
Work" worked for all of us.
