The Alex Hillman Family Foundation has
granted the politics department a $10,000
annual fellowship in the name of Richard A.
Hillman to be given to a politics graduate stu-
dent in the Institute of Philosophic Studies
(IPS).
According to Dr. Leo Paul de Alvarez,
chairman of the politics department, Richard
A. Hillman studied politics at Yale under Pro-
fessor Willmore Kendall.
Dr. Kendall taught at Yale before acting as
chairman of both the economics and politics
departments here at UD.
“He also taught Bill Buckley, but that’s
another story,” De Alvarez said.
Along with Dr. Louise Cowan, Kendall was
instrumental in beginning the program in pol-
ities and literature that subsequently became
the Institute for Philosophic Studies, Dr. de
Alvarez said.
Professor Kendall
“deemed [Richard A. Hill-
man] among the two or
three brightest students
he had ever taught,” ac-
cording to The National
Review (October 18,
1966).
Professor Kendall “deemed [Richard A.
Hillman] among the two or three brightest
students he had ever taught,” according to The
National Review (October 18, 1966).
Hillman died at the age of 28 while help-
ing a motorist, the jazz musician Dave Lam-
bert, who was changing a tire on the highway.
The National Review obituary reports that
“an enormous trailer truck roaring down the
road killed them both.”
The fellowship will be given at the end of
April for the next school year. Dr. Glen
Thurow, Provost, states that the annual fel-
lowship is equivalent to an endowment of
$200,000.

The board of trustees has recently approved a
plan which will raise faculty salaries over the next
five years in order to match average salaries of oth-
er schools of similar classification.
The salary increase proposal was initially
brought forth by the faculty senate. President Msgr.
Milam Joseph then adjusted the plan in order to
reach parity faster.
Dr. Glen Thurow, provost, said full-time profes-
sor salaries at the University of Dallas were 36 per-
cent below average for this category, while assis-
tant professor salaries were 17 percent below the
mean. The classifications are determined by Bar-
ron’s Guide, and UD’s classification includes such
school as Pepperdine University, Villanova and
Trinity College.
Over the past five years, the budget line

The future of the student govern-
ment was debated Thursday as can-
didates presented themselves to the
student body for election.
Since fewer than twenty students
came to hear the speeches, all
speakers stressed the need for stu-
dents to participate in the student
government by voting on Monday
and Tuesday.
Candidates ran for five offices:
president, vice-president of senate,
vice-president of programming, trea-
surer, and secretary.
Jason Knopsis, Joe Miller, and
Dan Oldenburg ran for president.
Oldenburg, the current vice-
president of the senate, stressed his
experience in student government
and said his vision for next year is
“to increase the great sense of com-
munity and academic spirit that ra-
diates from UD.”

recent memory. Last year, in com-
parison, UD students came away
with 8 awards.
“I’m really pleased that so many
different people won awards. The
whole staff really has worked hard
this year, and I’m glad that work has
been recognized,” Aaron Deacon,
editor-in-chief of The University
News, said.
Students receiving first place
awards were Joe Gristofaro (feature
story), Matt Granthan (news de-

Ladd also received a second

Deacon rounded out the awards
of this year's staff with an honorable
mention for news writing.
“Over the past few years, I think
the newspaper has made great
strides, I think the awards are in-
dicative of that progress, and I hope
the school will give the paper the
support it needs to continue to
grow,” he said.
