Harper High School Places Second
in District 8 2A Academic Meet
Our UIL team traveled
to Blanco this week to par-
ticipate in the District 8-AA
meet. We did VERY well, as
you can see below. We also
ended up in second place as
a whole team. On April 15
and 16, the contestants
underlined will travel to
Odessa for the regional
meet.

Harper High’s One Act Play Wins First in District
and Advances to Area Competition
District 8 2A One Act Play
Competition was held at
Fredericksburg High School
on Saturday March 26.
Results are listed below:
Advancing schools:
Harper High School and
Ingram. The alternate is
Blanco High School. Also
competing were Comfort
and Junction high schools.
Awards: AM star cast:
Caleb McKnight, Victoria
Bacon and Ellen Lashely.
Best actress-Tesca Korbelik.
Honor crew-Chelsea Hood.
Area 3 2A competition is
Thursday, Apr. 7 at Llano
High school. Shows there
start at 2:00 p.m. Harper
performs third.

The play is called “And the
Tide Shall Cover the Earth.”
It was written by Norma
Cole and published by
Anchorage Press. It is set in
the Kentucky Mountains in
the late 1940s.
Summary: It is about a
family who is being forced
of their land by the govern-
ment because of the con-
struction of a dam. It fol-
lows the family's struggle to
convince the family

Harper ISD Opens New
Baseball/Softball Complex

Juanice Grona, President
of the Harper School Board
of Trustees threw out the
first ball at the opening of
Harper ISD’s new softball
complex on Friday,
Mar. 25, 2011. Bartley
Parker (school board mem-
ber) threw out the ceremo-
nial ball for the baseball
field. Both the varsity and
junior varsity teams played
while fans enjoyed free hot

dogs to commemorate the
completion of the new
fields. This is a project that
has been three veal's in
progress and Harper teams
have played “outlaw” base-
ball and softball for the last
two years, only competing
away from home.
Harper fans were quite
impressed with the fields
and wished the teams well.

Winners of Gillespie
County Soil & Water
Conservation District’s 2011
Conservation Awards were
honored Wednesday, March
23. The Fredericksburg Lions
Club hosted the evening for
the winners, their families,
teachers, County officials,
and others at the Gillespie
County Extension Building.
Lion Pat Stapleton opened
the meeting and welcomed
the guests. Awards and pre-
sentations were given after
a hamburger dinner.
Twelve Gillespie County
students from
Fredericksburg and Harper
were honored for their win-
ning conservation posters
and essays. SWCD Directors
announced the Poster and
Essay winners and present-
ed students with engraved
wood plaques from LCRA.
Representing Security State
Bank & Trust and awarding
savings bond certificates to
the students were Vice
President Gladys Rogers and
Vice President Brenda
Burrier.
In the Poster contest for
ages nine and younger,
Denver Schneider, son of
Bradley and Jennifer
Schneider, won first place.
Mary Elizabeth Wilkinson,
daughter of Barbara
Wilkinson, took second.
Wyatt Geistweidt, son of
Shaun and Amanda
Geistweidt, won third. All
three students attend St.
Mary’s Catholic Schobl.
In the Poster contest for
ages 10 through 12, Morgyn
Granville, daughter of
Danielle and Michael
Granville, won first place.
Trent Henk, son of Debbie
and Royal Henk, placed sec-
ond. China G. Hale, daugh-
ter of Larissa and Kevin
Hale, won third. Morgyn
and Trent attend St. Mary’s
Catholic School, China
attends Harper Middle
School.
