Bluegrass Sunday
Service a Big Hit
bv Laura Kaiser
On April 29, St. James
Lutheran Church hosted a
special Bluegrass Sunday
Service featuring the band
Cross Mountain, which is
made up of local musicians
including David Wilson, son
of Delton and Elva Wilson.
Other members from the
Hill Country area include
David Goodnight (also a
veterinarian and interna-
tional pet food consultant)
Lee Line who plays guitar.
Gary Hatch plays bass. (He
plays in other bands includ-
ing the Poverty Playboys
who entertained us at the
Community Easter Service),
Sally Cowan, guitarist/
vocalist, recently joined
the group, along with 12-
string guitar player and
band co-leader, Jon
Whitley. David Wilson is
one of the main vocalists,
band leader, and exquisite-
ly plays the very difficult
Mandolin.
We were treated to a
variety of gospel songs
including old favorites, “I’ll
Fly Away”, and I Saw the
Light.” Cross Mountain also
performed several songs
from Sally Cowan’s CDs.
The band will have a web-
site up soon, but for now,
you can check their sched-
ule and booking openings
at: sallvcowan.org.
Perhaps the most moving
moment of this special
morning service was the
presentation of a check for
over $1,770.45 to the
“Dreams Fulfilled Through
Music” organization by
Frances Dendy on behalf of
the Harper United
Methodist Church, the
Harper Presbyterian Church
and St. James Lutheran
Church. The Pedernales
River chapter of Thrivent
Financial for Lutherans
contributed $600 to the
total.
This charitable organiza-
tion (Dreams Fulfilled
Through Music) promotes
the Alamo Angels, a singing
group made up of some
very special children and
young adults. (Rev. Neal
Matthews’son, Hale, is a
member of this group).
The group performed last
year in Harper, and just
recently in February.
Some of their members,
Sam Pestello and Kelee
Lawn, were in attendance
for the Bluegrass Service,
and they really enjoyed it!
Sponsors Delancey Pestello
and Sharyl Lawn received
the check from Frances and
shared with us about these
gifted musicians.
The Alamo Angels had just
been presented a special
resolution from the Texas
Senate, and performed in
the State Capitol on April
21. We are assured that
the Harper community will
continue to support this
unique ministry.
St. James’ hopes to have
another Bluegrass Service
very soon, and we know
that we will have a “full-
house” again. Members
from other Harper churches
attended on the 29th, which
once more shows the great
community “spirit” of our
little town. For more
information about Dreams
Fulfilled Through Music,

Mountain, contact David

Cowan, 210-872-4174, or

above.
So be watching in The
Harper News for details
about the next Bluegrass
Service.
