a number of lewd women who
live near the main entrance to
the garrison are in the habit
of conducting themselves in
such a manner as to insult de-
cent people passing near them

this disgusting state of affairs
is remedied
Baltazar Escatiola has pre-
sented The Herald with a sam-
ple of rye raised by him this
year in his garden patch The
rye is well developed and of
fine quantity and has yielded
by actual measurement three
ounces of rye to the stalk Mr
Escatiola only planted a small
quantity as an experiment and
has thus demonstrated that
this important cereal is well
adapted to the soil and climate
of the lower Rio Grande tWe

BOARD OF EQUALIZATION
The county commissioners
met in special session yester
day morning as a board of
business was transacted
By a unanimous vote of the
commissioners it was decreed
that Cameron county land be
subdivided into two grand
classes as follows
First Improved lands
Second Unimproved land
That the first class bo again
subdivided and valued as fol-
lows
1st Class All of the lands
by reason of their adjoining
and lying in close proximity
to the platted limits of the city
of Brownsville are therebj
greatlj enhanced in value shall
be and are hereby valupd for
assessment at 825 per acre
2nd Class All the lands
fronting on and near the river
and resacas which are cleared
or under cultivation shall be
valued for assessment at 10 per
acre
3rd Class All other lands
of first class which are not im-
proved of whicli are susceptible
of cultivation and are not em-
braced in the next foregoing
two classes of sub divisions
shall be valued for assessment
at > per acre this class to
include Clarks Island
Second Unimproved land
It is further ordered that all
unimproved lands be subdivid-
ed and valued as follows
1st Class All lands fronting
on the Rio Grande or other
water course and to a greater
or less extent susceptible of
cultivation are valued for as-
sessment at SlHO per acre
2nd Class All lands fit for
pasturage and not otherwise
classified shall be valued at 1
per acre
The above classifications and
valuations include all improve-
ments on the lands except
where in the judgement of the
board such valuations avouIcI
Work an injustice owing to the
fact that the improvements up-
on a given piece of land are of
much greater value than the
average improvements upon
the same class of lands
The clerk of the clerk was
ordered to notify the following
named persons to be and ap-
pear before the board of Equal-
ization on Monday June 24

show cause if any they have
why th assessment of their
property rendered by them for
year 1893 should not be raised
