located on West Houston near the old Anderson Hotel, in the general area
where The Antique Mall is now located. Coats began to sell and repair

site in 1959. The store was enlarged in 1980. Bobby Coats who owns and

Around Town - Cleveland on The Grow
Photos and Article by Glen Dodson
Ready or not,
Tis the Season. The
Christmas season is
on us andthenewyear
is just around the cor-
ner. There's a note of
optimism and cheer in
the air around Cleve-
land as everyone gears
up for the season.
City of Cleveland em-
ployees have put up the street
decorations for Christmas.
Folks are out decorating their
houses. Stores are decorated up
for Christmas and their shelves
are full of merchandise. Christ-
mas tree lots are springing up
around the area. There are so
many positive things happen-
ing.
The Cleveland Cham-
ber of Commerce First Satur-
day on December 2nd, begin-
ning at 9AM and continuing to
7PM. On the agenda for the day
will be booths of arts and crafts,
Christmas gifts, toys and col-
lectibles and a lot of food and
drinks and plenty of entertain-
ment.
At 3:30 PM, the Christ-
mas parade will wind its way
though downtown. The parade
will begin at Stancil Park this
year and wind up at the old
Meekins Parking Lot. There
will be a community tree light-
ing at dusk at the comer of
Travis and Hwy. 321 at the
railroad track with caroling
around the Christmas tree led
by the Community Choir. Santa
will be m the parade and after-
wards, he will be on the comer
of Travis and 321 on the old
Cleveland Advocate lot to meet
with the children. There will be
special music by the "San Jac
Wheels" at 2:00 PM.
Part of the First Satur-
day event will be the First An-
nual Christmas Cookie Festival
from 1 to 5:00 PM. The contest
is sponsored by Mike Heilers of
the Omni Success Group and
there will be $ 1,000 first place
prize; second place prize of $5 00
and third place, there will be
five winners of $ 100 each.
As the new year ap-
proaches, there is a new wave of
optimism visible in Cleveland
as the town shows signs of
growth and expansion.
New construction of a
medical building; new school
construction to begin in the near
future; the City of Cleveland
making many needed improve-
ments to the town; and a lot
more people shopping Cleve-
land.
The New Year 1996
can be one of our best yet, if we,
the citizens of Cleveland work
together to build a better future
not only for ourselves but for
our children and others w ho will
be moving into our area. We
can do this by getting away
from our petty jealousies, by
breaking down the racial barri-
ers, stop the continual bickering
and complaining about the city
government and the schools and
start looking for good instead of
so much of the bad.
So at the start of a most
beautiful season, from the staff
of the Illustrated Paperboy,
Happy Holidays.. .Merry Christ-
mas and soon to arrive, Happy-
New Year!
