STOLPIN CALLS JEWS HEATHEN
St Petersburg Premier Stoly
pin spoke In the Duma recently in
defense of the government draft of a
law dealing with the matter of chang-
ing from one faith to another and
against the modifications removing all
restrictions introduced in committee
He said that the Czar as head of the
ofrthodox church vshould not suffpr
backsliding from the orthodox to non
Christian beliefs and that if such
amendments were incorporated the bill
would be vetoed He defined the rela-
tions between church and state He
conceded that the church enjoyed full
independence in matters of creed and
dogma but insisted on state control
The classing by the premier of persons
of the Jewish faith and Mohammedans
with heathens excited indignation
among the Centrists and Progressives
among whom are Jews or Mohamme

It is announced that Rev H B Lieb
erman will hold special cantorial serv-
ices Friday night July 2 the last be-
fore his departure for the summer
OBITUARY
MARKS MARX
On June 24 at 3 a m Marks Marx
died at his home in Galveston at the
age of 73 Mr Marx was born in
Genvilleer Rxissia in 1S3G and came
to America with his parents when a
small boy
They landed in New Orleans where
Mr Marx received his education In
1S52 he located in San Francisco and
in 1SG1 went to Nevada in 1SG3 he
moved to Utah and conducted a pros-
perous business for two years After
leaving Utah Mr Mark returned to
Montana where he opened up a large
wholesale grocery business Three
years later selling out the grocery busi-
ness he returned to New Orleans
where on July 7 18GS he married Miss

Julia Newman and they settled in Gal-
veston where he continued to reiide
till his death lie was associated in
some of the leading mercantile enter-
prises of Galveston and accumulated
considerable wealth He was a mem-
ber of some of the largest fraternal
and religious societies of Galveston
Mr Marx was survived by his widow
and three married daughters Mrs Nat
N Jacob Mrs Samuel Frenkel and
Mrs Abe Blum four grandchildren
and one brother Louis Marx of this
city

The marriage of Miss Sarah Harris
to Mr Maurice J Goldstein took place
last Sunday at the home of brides
mother Mrs Bettie Harris of 704
Hamilton Avenue Dr Willner officiat-
ing The house and galleries were
beautifully decorated with palms and
cut flowers the color scheme being
pink and white Preceding the cere-
mony Mrs Nelson Munger sang My
Dear after which Miss Sadie Frezer
played Menhelssohns wedding march
to which the bridal party entered First
came the two little flower girls nieces
of the bride and groom Miss Adelena
Harris and Margaret Levy bearing
white ribbons to form an aisle then
ho best man Mr Miller of Orange
Then the maid of honor Miss Sadie
Harris gowned in a handsome lingerie
dress with Irish point embroidery The
groom entered on the arm of his moth-
er Mrs J Goldstein of Galveston and
immediately preceding the bride who
centered on the arm of her brother Mr
Louis L Harris came the little ring
bearer Master Emanuel Harris Ger
son who carried the ring in a white
satin pillow The bride wore her go-
ing away dress of Rajah silk in straw-
berry shade with hat to match Fol-
lowing the ceremony refreshments
were served The heart shaped wed-
ding cake was the central ornamenta-
tion of the table in the dining room
In drawing for the various emblems
Miss Carminee Fisher secured the
ring The brides boquet was caught
by Miss Rosa Kaiser The gifts were
numerous and costly The young
couple left for a trip to San Antonio
and other Southwestern points They
will be at home to friends after July
15 at 704 Hamilton street

A wedding of great interest locally
rook place last Sunday evening at Gal-
veston when Mr A S Weiner of Hous-
