game Friday night and did
a good job of executing
our game plan. We have
challenged them to hold their
opponents to 35 points or
less in district play and they
did exactly that. Our seniors
stepped up and did a great
job of leading their team on
the court. The Lady Tigers
face two tough opponents
this week with Seymour on
the road Tuesday and Petrolia

to see you in the stands
supporting your Tiger and
Lady Tiger basketball teams. ”

KIDS K0RNER
Kids Korner was written this week by Laura Grimsinger on "What Does Education Mean
to You?
In December, I took an opportunity to help the 4th grade explore the blessing of education
during their Character Education Class. To my delight, they seemed to understand the very
basic connection between their education and the opportunities it will provide for them intheir
adult life. Here are some of their thoughts:
A scholarship and college; A better job; Getting a degree and being able to get a good job
It is important to me; Serious; Going to college and never stop learning; Graduating from
high school and going to college;Being someone who stands up ( for good)
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, individuals who have less than a high
school diploma will have a 12.4 percent chance of being unemployed, and can earn an average
weekly wage of $471 (that’s $24,492 per year). By simply graduating from high school their
unemployment rate drops to 8.3% and their average weekly income increases to $652 (that’s
$33,904 per year or an increase of $9,412). As you can imagine, the study continues to reflect
income which dramatically increases as education increases.
Parents Play a Role
I further asked the students what they needed from their parents in order to be successful
in school. Aside from meeting their basic needs of food, clothing and love, the students wanted
their parents to care about their school work and to help them with their homework, to have
hope for their futures; and although they didn’t like admitting it, they alslo wanted their par-
ent’s discipline.
The School’s Part
Not to leave the parents alone, I asked the students what they needed from their school and
teachers in order to be successful; and the students articulately summarized; support, learning,
discipline and confidence.
Students Help Themselves
Finally, I asked them what they needed from themselves and they said: a quiet brain, to
listen and learn; to try their best, to obey, to believe in their self, to have confidence, not to be
afraid to achieve, to be brave and to have big dreams.
Success is What We Make It-TOGETHER
I was a little surprised by the students desire to for their parents to have hope for their future
nad their wanting their teachers to have confidence in them, and I was especially surpirsed that
these sweet fourth graders needed to encourage themselves to be brave in learning. However,
as I thought about it, they have reminded me that learning is risky business and it does require
all kinds of bravery, confdience and dreams.
Like the three legged milk stool, educating our children takes each "leg”-the Family, the
School and the Student in order to lift up our students to their best potential. If one of those legs
is broken, the stool wifi not work.
I thought I was teaching my students a lesson in character, but as it turns out they were
teachng me:
Our children want us to care about them, to have big dreams for them, to want them to
have a better life and they aslo want us to hold them accountable-to challenge them to their
highest and best potential. Even though these brilliant fourth graders seemed to intuitively
know that they have to put in th work, what they taught me was that they both want and need
the adults in their lives to care that they are learning, to understand that it can be hard work
and the risk of making mistakes is frightening to them, but with loving and firm support they
can be successful. They depend upon us to help them understand that what they do today wifi
ultimately lead to what they can do tomorrow.
I didn’t tell my students this, but what education means to me is giving each of my students
an opportunity for a successful, happy, and meaningful life filled with the satisfaction of know-
ing that the more you learn the better you get.
