1. Why do we need new schools?
ELECTRA SCHOOL BOMB - Q.
A facilities study done by a community committee in 2011 recommended the new schools in their master plan. The recommendation came after careful consideration of the deficiencies
in the current facilities.
Students and staff are facing deficiencies with the elevator, ADA compliance violations, restrooms, inadequate electrical supply, nonfunctional science labs, no fire sprinklers, and poor
air quality standards.
2. How much is it going to cost me?
If you are over 65, your taxes will NOT increase on your homestead property (if you have filed your exemption). If you own a $75,000 home your taxes will inc rease by $188.40/year or
$15.70/month. (That's the same as .50/day or a $3.50/week!). Homes valued at $50,000 will see a tax increase of $125.60/year or $10.47/month.
3. Where will the new school be located? What will happen to the old school? And what about the Park?
The new high school and junior high school will be located where the Community Center sits now. The old high school will remain and become the new EISD Administration building.
The auditorium will continue to be utilized for reunions, plays, etc. The gym, ag building, and football stadium will be used as well. The City Park and Community Center will most likely
be located at the former Dinsmore location in a trade with the city. The city pool will remain in its current location.
4. Why now? Enrollment has decreased?
Whether there are 2,000 students or 200 the district is still in NEED of new facilities. Safety and security issues are present and the school has inefficient capabilities for computers, sci-
ence labs, and other key components. Also, interest rates are historically low. By acting now before interest rates increase, taxpayers would be savings thousands in interest payments.
5. What about the water? If we run out, there will be no need for a new school?
City, County, and State officials are working to ensure that if the lakes "go dry" there will still be water. Various options are being pursued for water supplies. The committee encourages
citizens to seek out city and county officials on this issue as the City and EISD are separate entities.
6. Do we have the tax base to support this bond?
Yes, bond agents used conservative estimates of $300 million when calculating the tax base. The tax base is actually higher based on the booming oil and gas industry that surrounds
Electra and is part of the school district's taxable base. In fact the TOP 50 taxpayers (mostly oil and gas owners) pay 66.2% of the taxes. Therefore, the taxing burden does not lie upon
individual citizens. Analysts predict the oil and gas industry to continue its upswing for many years.
