A CITI CONVENTION
Tho Question of KnmlnRtlons an Viewed
by tlio People and the Candidates
A meeting will be held at the office of
A M Carter Eq chairman of the Dem-
ocratic executive committee at 2 oclock
tnis afternoon at which the committee
will discuss and perhaps settle theqnes
tiou of a convention for the nomination
of city officials As to the advisability
of
holding such a convention there is a
wide variance of opinion The feeling
is generally prevalent among Democratic
voters that if there is any real danger of
opposing elements centering on known
enemies of Democracy for anv or
all of the municipal offices then
it would be well to nominate Some
think that secret Combinations may thus
be formed by a factiSn who will keep
dark as to their designs but on election
day center on their rain or men and elect
him Hence they urge the policy of Dem-
ocratic indorsement as expressed through
the people in convention
Others assert that as the offices arc in
no wise political that there exists no ne-
cessity for a convention
The candidates are likewise far from
entertaining a unanimity of sentiment on
the subject Some say that unless a con-
vention is held they will not run while
several affirm their preference for a free
forall race and the devil take the hind-
most In any event the smooth manip-
ulator of votes the expert that gets in
nl persuasive work on the great mass of
suffrage sllnrs will make himself fret
Tost he will have plenty of competition
to relieve the affair of dullness is abso-
lutely certain The number of canOl
dates for the various offices guarantees
that The only mystery connected with
the whole thing Is the excessive modesty
of the aforesaid candidates who refrain
from letting the public know in anj
formal way that they are really desirous
of office

MACADAMIZED ROADS
The Need and Advantages of Good Roads
tu larrRnr County
Four wouth tex Jan 41SS7
To the Editor of the Gazctto
I see in yon article of this mornings
issue in regard to the advancement of
the material interest of Tarrant county
you suggest a very important matter to
my mipd one of the very best modes of
doing that which it has ever been the
aim of your valuable journal the up
building of our city ard county 1 mean
the construction of macadamized roads
by the commiisiiners court I do not
know the present iluancial ability of the
couuty but 1 think i
road and bridge tax of 1 mill on the dol
lar and with which I think could be con-
structed as many as eight macadamized
roads at least for e dist-
ance of ten miles each out of our
city I think It will be found that
lime rock and river gravel can be found
convenient so as to mike the cost not ex-
ceeding 81000 a mile and when these
roids aie bull property within their
reach will be enhanced at least ten times
1 mill on the dollar These roads
would reach the bulk of the taxable
values of the lands in Tarrant couuty
More han a year ago one of ourpublic
spiri edcinzens Cant Evans was willing
to micadamize two or three miles from
the ciy in a westerly direction and take
the promise to p < y of the county in the
shape of certificates of indebtedness and
let a difiuteresL a riody of men value the
cost of the work Jfaw if any consider-
able Dumher of men would employ their
canltal in this way I doubt not that the
commissioners court would let out
beginnings of the work in this
way and in a short time tne
roads would be here to demonstrate
the ben fit that would ensue to the pub-
lic Those who have lived where macad-
amized roads are know the great advan-
tage they ar to the community As yet
we have had little rams this winter but a
certain amount must fall every year and
we may look for a wet season soon that
will make us cry aloud for these valuable
adjuncts to trade Now that you have
set the ball in motion do not let it cease
rolling even if a special act of the legis
lature be necessary to accomplish the end
Yours truly C C Jcmmixgs

Said Mr Lynn Itlook to me that the
establishment of such a plant at s me

> ra
candidly think that your city is the proper Ifegb fn citron
and natural place for it Why Because O
of your splendid railway system and the
nearness to the sources of supply The
big ranches of the West and Northwest
and the Territory are all witnin easy
shipping distance of Fort Worth
But capital is needed to operate the
refriuerator business and that must be
secured first Now I think is an au
spicious time to strike I see that other
Texas cities are agitating the matter
San Antonio and Houston are both work-
ing vigorously to secure refrigerators for
dresting beef and other live stock on a
big scale Fort Worth lias superior ad-
vantages to ether and I would be glad
along with hundreds of producers to sec
the enterprise put under way here It
will not onlv be i great advantage in
bnilding up F rt Worth but would help
the rauije menbv ertatmiiahome demand
for their stock nml relieving them from
the monopolistic clutches of the Eastern
rings that dictute prics
Mr Lynn stated further that he would
attend the stockmens convention tat
met in Dallas Tuesday next and looked
to see a big fathering on that occasion
11 reference to tne question of a national
commission to take the place of the
bureau of aniuial industry he said that
his views were in the main
with those of the writer off
an article in Wednesdays GAZK3rrif
which discountenanced such an inubva

For several years a New York chemist
has been experimenting with a view to
iyprivlng alcoholic liquors of their intoxi
cating principle According to this gen-
tleman the intoxicating principle is the
ether or combinations of ether which
remains in acobol even after the fusel oil
has been caruluDy extracted ether in
combination with certain gums that give
whisky and brandy their characteristic
odors and some of their qualities has
never been eliminated heretofore without
wholly destroying the liquor as a medici-
nal or exhilarating beverage Tae pro-
cess by which the ethers or combinations
of ether with the gums held in solution
a e eliminated is a secret one for which
the inventor expects to be rewarded
should the process come into general

ethened whisky an almost constant
beverage for several years and to have
experienced no ill effects whatever One

a quart bottle experiencing no otaer re-

The chemistry of intoxication according
to mjny experiments with whisky before
and after this secret treatment is that in
the analjsis to which the whisky is sub-
mitted by the stomach the tthers affct
the brain and are solely responsible for
dizziness and intoxication while the food
maurial in the alcohol goes to enrich the
blood and stimulate the body with a
rapidity unequaled in the case of solid
foo 1 After many months of careful ex-
periment the imentor al o believes that

cle of the material which is of value in
whi ky or brandy as a medicinal agent
and he professes to have msde some re
deethened
of chills and
was by doses after
every other rem dy had failed
Tue inventor believes that in making
this discovery he has done a great work
fur the prohibitionists inasmuch fg
whisky after such treatment may be re
garded as nothing more or less irrtu food
of a highly nitritious and valuable kind
and under this belief he has attempted to
obtain the approbation of the leading
ptohibition advocates Unfortunately he
floes nut seem to have been successful
He sajs that the Kev Dr Howard
Crosby treated him like a niggtr and
seemed to take his visit and his bottle of
whisky as a personal insult Dr Crosby
referred him with extreme warmth to the
ohejpists and said that he had nothing to
do withthe scientific aspects of the ques-
tion With other lights of the temperance
cause he met with no b tier lnck Upon

one prominent expert in liquors declared
to the inventor that no liquordealer in
