UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE
ORLANDO F. BATTEY, OF FLOYDADA, TEXAS.
CHECK FOR DRAFT APPARATUS.Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 15,1913.
Application filed May 1, 1912. Serial No. 694,530.To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, OilLANDo F. BATTEY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at
Floydada, in the county of Floyd, State of
5 Texas, have invented certain new and useful
Improvements in Checks for Draft Appara-
tus; and I do hereby declare the following
to be a full, clear, and exact description of
the invention, such as will enable others
10 skilled in the art to which it appertains to
make and use the same.
This invention relates to check attach-
ments for draft apparatus.
The object of the invention resides in the
15 provision of a check attachment which may
be readily associated with a draft apparatus
and when so associated will permit the pull
rope of the apparatus to be operated freely
to effect the necessary draft upon the object
20 being operated upon but which will auto-
matically lock the pull rope against move-
ment under the influence of the tension of
the apparatus when the force applied to the
rope to effect such tension is removed.
25 A further object of the invention resides
in the provision of a check attachment of
the character referred to which will be sim-
ple in construction, efficient in use, and
which may be associated with facility and at
30 small cost with any cable operated draft ap-
paratus.
With the above and other objects in view,
the invention consists in the details of con-
struction and in the arrangement and com-
35 bination of parts to be hereinafter more
fully described and particularly pointed out
in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, ref-
erence will be had to the accompanying
40 drawings wherein like characters of refer-
ence denote corresponding parts in the sev-
eral views, and in which-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hoisting
rigging having the improved checking at-
45 tachment associated therewith, Fig. 2, a side
elevation of the upper sheave of the hoisting
rigging which carries the checking attach-
ment, said attachment being shown in sec-
tion with the parts thereof in inactive posi-
50 tion with respect to the cable of the hoisting
rigging, Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 2 with
the parts of the attachment in active posi-
tion or clamping relation to the cable of the
rigging, Fig. 4, a section on the line 4-4 of
55 Fig. 2, Fig. 5, a detail perspective view of
the inner clamping element of the attach-ment, and Fig. 6, a detail perspective view
of the outer clamping element of the attach-
ment.
Referring to the drawings 10 indicates 60
the upper or stationary sheave of the hoist-
ing rigging, 11 the lower or movable sheave
and 12 the cable of said rigging. Depend-
ing from the sheave 10 are a pair of spaced
ears 13 and 14 which are connected at their 65
free ends by a bolt 15 extending across the
space between said ears. Secured in the
usual manner between the ears 13 and 14 to
the bolt 15 is the cable 12 of the rigging.
This cable is carried over the pulleys of the 7o
sheaves 10 and 11 in the usual and well
known manner, the end of the cable remote
from that secured to the bolt 15 passing
over the pulley of the sheave 10 which is
disposed in vertical alinement with the ears 75
13 and 14. This last named end of the cable
16 is then carried through the checking at-
tachment as will hereinafter appear.
The checking attachment comprises a U-
shaped outer clamping member A including 8o
arms 17 and 18 and a bight portion 19. The
free ends of the arms 17 and 18 are pivotally
mounted on the bolt 15 exteriorly of the ears
13 and 14 respectively. These arms are also
provided with corresponding longitudinal 85
slots 20 and 21 respectively for a purpose
that will presently appear. The attachment
further includes a U-shaped inner clamping
member B which comprises arms 22 and 23
and a bight portion 24. The free ends of o
the arms 22 and 23 are pivotally connected
to the ears 13 and 14 respectively at a point
inward of the bolt 15 and the length of the
member B is considerably less than the mem-
ber A so that the latter may receive the 3
member B without interfering engagement
between the bight portions 19 and 24. Pass-
ing transversely through the arms 22 and 23
adjacent the bight portion 24 is a pin 25
whose terminals extend through and are oo
slidable in the slots 20 and 21 respectively.
The bight portion 24 of the member B is
curved inwardly, such curvature being op-
posite to that of the bight portion 19 so that
said bight portions 24 and 19 form a passage 105
through which extends the free end of the
cable 16.
In order to elevate the sheave 11 and the
load carried thereby it is only necessary to
pull downwardly on the free end of the cable 110
12 as is usual in hoisting riggings. Should
it then be desired to support the load in1,067,456.
