Change is inevi-
table, but it doesn’t
mean I have to like it.
Like most things in
life, change involves
letting go and sur-
rendering once again to an entity I
cannot see, hear or understand.
Change for most of us is like
experiencing a loss of some kind. I
wish I was able to embrace change
quickly, while experiencing the five
stages of grief in a matter of sec-
onds — denial, anger, bargaining,
depression and acceptance — but
most times I tend to linger in one
of these stages.
The Lenten season is about em-
bracing change, accepting God’s will
and relying more on God. For 40
days, Catholics give up something
they love, or embrace a new con-
cept, with the intention of relying
more heavily on God’s guidance
and grace and less on our own finite
selves.
Therefore, it is fitting during this
season of Lent that many Texas
dioceses are experiencing a change
of leadership.
For the Diocese of Corpus Christi
we will lose a great shepherd and
leader in Bishop Edmond Car-
mody.
Our next edition of the South
Texas Catholic will highlight the life
of Bishop Carmody on the occasion
of his retirement
Bishop Carmody has been a man
of action tor the past 10 years. He
has been a shepherd to all of us
through some very difficult times
of the church.
When I first came to the Diocese
of Corpus Christi, I was struck
by Bishop Carmody’s charisma
and character, but mostly by his
kindness and compassion. He
tells priests that no one ever left
Catholicism because a priest was
too kind.
Out of nothing he spearheaded
the creation of John Paul II High
School. He has fought the fight
against diabetes by steadfastly, year
after year, launching a campaign to
fight the disease by promoting and
participating in the Diabetes walk
and challenging area leaders to a
racquetball match.
He has been a beacon to all
churches, visiting parishes each
weekend; and he has recruited
priests from other countries, pri-
marily India, so that small church-
es in rural areas would have a priest
available to them.
He created the Mother Teresa
Day Shelter for the homeless.
He knocked on doors to ask
kids to go back to school and show
families that someone in this com-
munity cares about them.
He has always shown us a great
deal of dignity and courage. He
leaves a legacy of kindness and
compassion. By his actions he
shows us how change can be
good.
In many ways Lent is a time of
action. A time to strip away the old
self or habits that make up our ego
and set them free.
Some of us reach out to spiri-
tual advisors, priests, counselors,
friends and families to help us
through these difficult transitions.
We talk or write about our tears
and worries. We attend retreats,
classes and workshops. We pray
and we long for a graceful way to
accept the inevitability of change.
While the Lenten season may
represent loss and change, it pre-
pares us for a new season... a sea-
son of our Saviour’s resurrection, a
season of new beginnings.
