Bishops in Japan ask
world leaders to work for
end of nuclear weapons
TOKYO (CNS) ~ Bishops from
Hiroshima and Nagasaki called on
world leaders to work toward the
total abolition of nuclear weapons.
In an open letter to U.S. President
Barack Obama and the Japanese
government Feb. 26, the bishops said
it was time to take the “courageous
step,” reported the Asian church
news agency UCA News. “Nuclear
weapons deprived over 100,000
people of their lives in an instant at
the end of the previous world war.
And bomb survivors continue to
suffer physically and spiritually even
now,” wrote Archbishop Joseph Mit-
suaki Takami of Nagasaki and Bishop
Joseph Atsumi Misue of Hiroshima.
“We ... demand that the president
of the United States, the Japanese
government and the leaders of other
countries make utmost efforts to
abolish nuclear weapons,” they said.
The bishops described it as “sad and
foolish to abuse the progress that
humanity has made in the fields of
science and technology, in order to
destroy lives as massively and swiftly
as possible, and to earn more profit
by producing weapons.” They said
there are more than 20,000 nuclear
weapons in the world and it was es-
sential to reduce the number.
Church coordinates aid,
offers condolences to
quake victims’ families
LIMA, Peru (CNS) - As Chiles
Catholic Church coordinated aid to
victims of the massive earthquake
that struck the country's central
coast on Feb. 27, church leaders ex-
pressed their condolences to families
of the more than 700 people killed.
“This has been a catastrophe,” said
Bishop Alejandro Goic Karmelic of
Rancagua, president of the Chilean
bishops’ conference. “We ache for
our brothers and sisters who have
lost their lives, and we pray for their
families and friends and those who
have lost all the possessions for which
they have worked all their lives.” After
praying the Angelus Feb. 28, Pope
Benedict XVI said, “I am praying
for the victims and am spiritually
close to those affected by this serious
catastrophe. For them, I ask God to
grant relief of suffering and courage
in this adversity.” Chilean President
Michelle Bachelet declared the
southern regions of Maule and Bio-
Bio a disaster area, ordered the army
to reinforce the police and imposed
a nighttime curfew on the region to
halt looting of stores. She also asked
other countries to assist with field
hospitals, water purification and
communications equipment, and
generators. Telephone communica-
tion with Chile still was difficult
March 1, and Chileans abroad strug-
gled to contact relatives. Much of the
disaster area and even some commu-
nities around the capital, Santiago,
were without electricity. Most deaths
were in the Maule region, about
200 miles south of Santiago, where
a quake-triggered tidal wave swept
through coastal villages.

Pope expresses sorrow
over murder of Christians
in Iraq
VATICAN CITY (CNS) - Pope
Benedict XVI has expressed his deep
concern and sorrow over the continu-
ing wave of violence against Christians
in Mosul, Iraq. Vatican Radio and the
Vatican newspaper, L’Osservatore Ro-
mano, reported Feb. 24 that although
the pope is on retreat and not speak-
ing publicly, he expressed his sorrow
that “in the area of Mosul, the killing
of Christians continues.” Earlier that
day, funerals were celebrated for the
murdered father and two brothers
of a Syrian Catholic priest, Father
Mazen Ishoa, who himself had been
kidnapped and released in 2007. Mur-
dered in their home Feb. 23, the three
deaths brought to seven the number
of Christians murdered in Mosul in a
10-day period. Publishing the pope’s
reaction to the murders, the Vatican
newspaper also published for the first
time a letter sent in January to Iraqi
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki by
Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Vatican
secretary of state. The cardinal told
the prime minister that the pope had
asked him to write and express his
“sincere solidarity” with al-Maliki
and other leaders after a series of at-
tacks on government buildings and
on places of worship, both Muslim
and Christian.

And vet, in the midst of our
darkness, we remember that
God did not abandon His
beloved Son, but raised Him
from death to glory. And God
does not abandon its. Everyone should know that.
This Lent, will you support the priests, Sisters, Brothers and
lay catechists in the Missions who bring this hope-filled
Easter message to the poor and suffering?
"My God, my God, why have you
abandoned me?"
Haven't we sometimes felt
abandoned ourselves? As we
cope with illness, death, job loss
or other burdens? At these times,
hope seems to have disappeared.
