a New Church Year Begins
ii

007 is still a
month away, but
the New Year of the
Church begins this
weekend on Decem-
ber 3, the first Sun-
day of Advent. In
the second reading
for this Sunday’s
liturgy, which begins Cycle C of the three
liturgical cycles of readings, St. Paul in his
letter to the Thessalonians says, “Brothers and
sisters: May the Lord make you increase and
abound in love for one another and for all, just as
we have for you ...” The Word to Life series
reflects on the first two Sundays of Advent.

Making a ‘Journey of Faith’
ut in society,
“it is hard
work to keep focused
on the Lord and the
ways of Jesus Christ.”
The words of Israel
Suarez, a parishioner
of Our Lady of
Guadalupe in Corpus Christi, may reflect the
thoughts of many. Recently, he and others from
two Corpus Christi and Alice parishes came
together to learn that keeping focused on faith
and the source of faith is a happy journey when
you do it within a community.

Hundreds of parishioners of St. Mary Mission in Robstown flocked to the November 9 blessing and dedication of
their new church. The long-awaited event began in the old church and continued with a procession to the new
structure which is located next to the original house of worship. The old building will now be used as a parish hall
and a meeting place for the ministries, including St. Mary's large religious education program. In his homily
during the Mass, Bishop Edmond Carmody reminded the congregation of the hard work and sacrifice of their
parents and grandparents before them. "They had very little of this world," said the bishop, who added that there
was one thing they had in great abundance. "They had a deep, profound faith."

December Retirement Collection for Religious expresses
love for those who have lived a life of loving others
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
In these last days of the year 2006,
as we complete our time of remem-
brance and thanksgiving, I ask you
again to remember the religious who
have served God’s holy people for so
many years. Please contribute
generously to the upcoming Retire-
ment Collection for Religious which
will be held the weekend of Decem-
ber 9 and 10, 2006. Last year, 2005,
the total sent to the National
Religious Retirement Office from the
Diocese of Corpus Christi was a
very generous $83,779.04. I ask
you to be just as generous, even
more generous this year.
In December, please welcome into
your parish those persons, religious
and lay, who will make the appeal on
behalf of the Retirement Collection
and please respond—as generously
as possible—to their appeal.
The Collection date is set for
December 9 and 10, 2006. Each
parish may decide to have the appeal
for the 2006 Collection on the
weekend of December 2 and 3 or the
weekend of December 9 and 10 You
may find further aids to prepare for
the Collection on www.usccb.org/
nrro .
It is my hope that you will respond
to this year’s appeal with grateful
hearts. Your generous contribution
to this Collection will be a very
practical expression of your love
and esteem for those religious who
have deeply influenced your lives.
May the Lord bless you and keep
you.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Edmond
Carmody D.D.
Bishop of Corpus Christi
God Tmpredictably’ good, says new bishop in parting words
Elena Teresa Crawford, 6, hugs her uncle,
now-Bishop Daniel Flores, as her mother,
Teresa Crawford, sister of the bishop,
stands near to them at a November 18
farewell reception at Corpus Christi
Cathedral.
(Editors note: Coverage of
Bishop Daniel Flore s’ ordination
in Detroit will be published in the
December 15 South Texas
Catholic.)
By Paula Goldapp
Just two weeks ago, Bishop-
designate Daniel Flores, guest of
honor at three days of farewell
celebrations commonly called
despedidas in south Texas,
admitted he was experiencing a
“bit of sadness,” then added,
“not just a bit,” as he said
“thank you” and “goodbye” to
the people of the Diocese of
Corpus Christi.
“It’s been a month of great ups
and downs emotionally,” said
the priest, who was named a
bishop by Pope Benedict XVI on
October 28 and was since
ordained to the episcopacy at
the Cathedral of the Most
Blessed Sacrament in Detroit on
N ovember 29.
“But life goes forward and we are
a people of hope and in a deep,
deep way, a people of joy,” said
Bishop Flores, who will now serve
as an auxiliary bishop for the
Detroit archdiocese under the
leadership of Cardinal Adam
Maida.
Farewell receptions were held
after all the Nov. 18 and 19 week-
end Masses at Corpus Christi
Cathedral, where the new bishop
had most recently served as rector.
Priests, sisters and employees of
the Diocese of Corpus Christi said
their goodbyes at the final send-off
on Nov. 20.
The biggest event was after the
Nov. 18 vigil Mass, attended by
Bishop Flores’ mother and siblings,
as well as hundreds of members of
his parish family.
