'You are a priest forever'
By Alfredo E. Cardenas
South Texas Catholic
In keeping with his ap-
proach to ministry, Bishop
Wm. Michael Mulvey com-
missioned his new priests to
“seek out the lost.”
“If they are not seated in
front of you on Sunday, go
sit in front of them,” Bishop
Mulvey told Father John
Chavarria, Father Joseph
Thang Nguyen and Father
Alex Saenz at their ordination
to the priesthood on June 11.
“Your attitude must be
that of Christ. He became
what we are and we must
become who He is,” Bishop
Mulvey said.
The bishop cautioned the
new priests of the Diocese
of Corpus Christi that they
should not “take this call
lightly.”
“This is no graduation
ceremony, this is an ordina-
tion. You will continue to be
formed in your ministry,”
Bishop Mulvey said.
Father John Chavarria
Father Chavarria is the
only son of Elva Chavarria of
Alice and grew up as a mem-
ber St. Elizabeth of Hungary.
Perhaps because he is an only
child, his view of family is
more extended than most.
“Family is not just the
ones that we are born into
and are loved by, but the
spiritual families that we are
bonded to by virtue of our
own baptism in the faith,”
Father Chavarria said.
This view of family, natu-
rally, extends to his brother
priests in the presbyterate.
“They’ve always showed great
witness of being a priest-
men of God—to His flock.
I’ve known nothing but the
kindness and gentleness and
humor of God the Father
through them,” he said.
Among the priests that he
considers having influenced
his discernment and forma-
tion are Bishop Daniel Flores
of the Diocese of Browns-
ville, Father James Stembler,

Through the laying on of the hands by the bishop and the Prayer of Ordination, the gift of the Holy Spirit
for the priestly office is conferred on the candidates. Together with the bishop, the priests present lay
hands on the candidates to signify incorporation into the presbyterate. Father Emilio Jimenez, Vicar of
Priests, at left, lays hands on Deacon Joseph Thang Nguyen; Father Joseph Lopez, Chancellor and incom-
ing Vocations Director, lays hands on Deacon Alex Saenz; and Father James Stembler, current Vocations
Director and upcoming pastor at St. Gertrude Parish in Kingsville, lays hands on Deacon John Chavarria
who will be his Parochial Vicar at St. Gertrude.
Father Jose Salazar, Msgr.
Stanley Sliwiak and Father
Bartholomew Leon, O.S.B.
Father Chavarria, who
graduated from St. Mary’s
Seminary in Houston with a
Masters of Divinity, will cel-
ebrate his thanksgiving Mass
at St. Elizabeth of Hungary in
Alice before joining his voca-
tions director, Father Stem-
bler, as Parochial Vicar of St.
Gertrude Parish in Kingsville.
“I am humbled and hon-
ored to be working in the
vineyard with the bishop and
my brothers in the presbyter-
ate, and sharing the priest-
hood of Jesus Christ with
everyone,” Father Chavarria
said. “I look forward to cel-
ebrating the sacraments with
the people of God.”
Father Joseph Thang
Nguyen
Father Nguyen is the
youngest of a family of eight.
