Historic treaty ends 36-year civil
war in Guatemala; doubt remains
GUATEMALA CITY (CNS) —
)ne of Latin America's Iongest-
unning wars officially ended Dec.
9 with the signing of a historic
eaty by the Guatemalan govem-
lent and leaders of a Marxist rebel-
on.
President Alvaro Arzu and the
aders of the four main factions of
te rebels’ Guatemalan National
Revolutionary Unit signed the agree-
ment in a glittering ceremony in the
courtyard of the National Palace.
The treaty marks the end of a 36-
year conflict in which 140,000
people died.
Many Guatemalans doubt the
treaty will quickly transform the
impoverished country, but a crowd
of 35,000 people crowded the plaza

Guatemala City. A historic peace treaty was signed that day by the
uatemalan government and leftist rebels, ending 36 years of civil
outside the palace to hear Arzu de-
clare “the war is over.”
Standing shoulderto shoulder with
rebel commander Ricardo Ramirez
de Leon, Arzu admonished the exu-

Dear Brothers and
Sisters,
First, permit us to
wish you a New Year
rich in God' s Grace and
Peace!
As you know, our
Holy Father, Pope John
Paul II, recently pre-
sided at the solemn be-
ginning of die three year
preparation period
(1997-1999) for The Great Jubilee in the Year 2000.
In “Tertio Millenio Adveniente," His Holiness has stated that
this preparatory phase, "wholly directed towards the celebration
of the mystery of Christ the Saviour,” will be of fundamental
importance in order to live the great event of the Jubilee as “an
occasion of special grace" in which every Christian “will stand
with the renewed wonder of faith before the love of the Father.”
Our Holy Father has described this entire period as a “new
advent” to prepare for the jubilee commemoration of the two
thousand years since the birth of Jesus Christ.
Here in the Diocese of Corpus Christi, we will initiate this three
year period with the Celebration of the Holy Eucharist at the
Cathedral on Friday, January 17, 1997, at 7:00 p.m.
We would, therefore, like to take this opportunity to invite you
to join us at this special Mass.
We look forward to seeing you. Asking God's blessing upon
you, we remain
Faithfully yours in the Lord,
Bishop of Corpus Christi
