Catholic Social Services
Coadjutor Bishop Roberto Gonzalez blessed the staff and
volunteers of Corpus Christi Catholic Social Services Dec. 19
along with boxes of food and bundles of toys, which were
then distributed to needy families.
RIGHT, Bishop Gonzalez blessed the crowd of people who
turned out for the generous offering. After he said a short
prayer and welcomed everyone he continued through the
work area and kitchen, and another area of the facility filled
with toys and presents.
LEFT, Monsignor Robert Freeman, Vicar for So-
cial Communications and Services, and Santa
Dinn, CSS staff member, kept the workers and
volunteers in high spirits by helping give out
boxes of food. Sister Milagros Tormo, M)Mj, the
director of Corpus Christi Catholic Social Ser-
vices directed the operation. Monsignor Free-
man also blessed more baskets at Mt. Thabor

Mission study results
hope to reduce strain
on parishes, pastors
By Msgr. Tom McGettrick
Vicar for Priests
During the year 1996, the Priestly Life and Spirituality
Committee of the Presbyteral Council undertook a major
study of the missions of the diocese. The reason for the study
was concern on the part of the Bishops and Presbyteral
Council because many priests are continuing to maintain the
same level of ministry as was given a generation ago when
most parishes had two or three priests. The fact that most
parishes now have only one priest and the median age of
priests continues to rise has caused great concern. Adding to
the crisis is the sad reality that many religious orders are no
longer able to staff parishes as in the past.
In considering various possibilities to lessen the stress on
parish priests, the Committee decided to focus on the many
missions of the diocese. Committee members met with
representatives of the missions and the parishes to which
they were attached. Concern was expressed for the ever
increasing weekend burden on pastors, while at the same
time, being very sensitive to die emotional and spiritual
attachment of many people and their mission church.
Over a period of four months, all missions of the diocese
were visited and the Committee’s report was presented to
Bishop Gracida on November 20, 1996. Msgr. Richard
Shirley, Chairman of the Committee, explained the recom-
mendations. It was recommended that many missions re-
main as they have been in the past, but it also recommended
that a number of missions be reduced to the level of a
Station. A Station does not have regularly scheduled week-
end Masses, but will have the Mass from time to time
depending on the availability of the pastor and the pastoral
needs of the faithful.
To lessen the work of the parish staff, Bishop Gracida
accepted the recommendation of the Committee that the
Sacramental and financial books be incorporated into those
of the parish.
Approved by Bishop Gracida were the following Com-
mittee recommendations: Sacred Heart Mission in Alice be
closed and the church building be moved to St. Joseph’s
Parish as a Day Chapel. Sacred Heart Mission in Ricardo
becomes a mission of Our Lady of Consolation Parish in
Vattman. Christ the King Mission on the King Ranch
becomes a Station of St. Martin's Parish; and the Collegiate
Parish of St. Thomas Aquinas at Texas A&M in Kingsville
becomes a Campus Center attached to St. Gertrude Parish.
The following missions were reduced to the level of
stations; St. Pius X in Sandia; Immaculate Conception in
Conceptio; Our Lady of Guadalupe in Ramirez; and St.
Catherine in Blaconia.
It was also recommended that the Parish of Our lady of
Lourdes in Zapata schedule its mission Masses in such a
way that it will not be necessary to have a weekend Mass in
each mission every week.
In addition to Msgr. Shirley, the other members of the
Mission Study Committee were Msgr. Thomas Meany;
Msgr. Robert Clark; Msgr. Lawrence White; Msgr. Daniel
Flores; Msgr. James Harris; Father Seamus McGowan;
Father Roger Smith; and Father Paul Hesse.
