‘My soul

STC/Paula Goldapp
May is traditionally recognized as the month of Mary. The words, “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my
spirit rejoices in God my savior,” begin the prayer of Mary known as the Magnificat, which is found in the Gospel
of Luke. The image of Mary above is fitting for the coastal region of south Texas. It is known as Our Lady Star of the
Sea and is found in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church on Corpus Christi Beach. Another church in the diocese which
bears the Latin version of this title of Mary, Stella Maris, is located in the small town of Lamar. The shell crete structure
is the oldest standing house of worship in the diocese and is celebrating its 150th anniversary with Mass and a special
celebration on May 25.
Pope’s visit to U.S. brings another unexpected
blessing for Ruiz family of Corpus Christi
By Paula Goldapp
Unexpected events are often viewed
as obstacles to a fulfilling future. For a
mother, a most frightening happening
in life is discovering her child has a
serious illness. It is an experience she
would rather endure herself.
When Beverly Ruiz talks about the
day three years ago that her young son
was diagnosed with muscular dystro-
phy, her eyes still well-up with tears.
But her gentle smile quickly lights
up her face as she explains how her

child’s illness has brought many unexpected
blessings to her family.
“This little boy has taken us to all ends of
the earth and opened so many doors,” she
says as the smile remains.
While not always easy, her family’s life is
fulfilling, “Everyone brings their blessings
to the table for our son,” says his mother.
Beverly and George Ruizs son is Aaron,
a nine-year-old in the third grade in the
London school district. He is the youngest
of three children. Aarons older sisters are
Christina Ruiz, 13, an eighth grader and
Alyssa Ruiz, 11, who is in the fifth grade.
The family spends their worship time
between their home parish of St. Philip
the Apostle and Corpus Christi Cathedral,
where all their children participate in the
music ministry.
Last month the person who brought his
blessings and hope to Aaron, his family and
the rest of the country was Pope Benedict
XVI.
From the moment she saw an early mora-
