The dullness < t tho Season will Per-
mit Early Delivery of Cattle
in llie Morth
Cottle IiOBt in Arizona Latt Year Getting
in Shape ± cr Fccdlcs Bids from
Northern Stockmen
Mr Mat Ejau a stockman of Montana
who has been in the city for several days
will go west today
Local dealings in jive stcck aie not so
brisk as they were a week ago The dull-
ness is caused by the bsd weather
Mr George Britten of St Louis who is
interested m a large herd of stock in the
Panhandle was in tne city yesteidcy He
considers his money invested in live stock
is being secure and though just now he
is getting little profit on it he thinks the
future full of promise
x
A stockman of large experience said
yesterday that he expected judging from
the mildness cf the season delivery of
stcck on the northern ranges would begin
as early as April 15 this year Tne ground
has received such soaking that the grass
will be in condition for the handling of
the cattle at an early day
There have been a few northern stock-
men in the city already with a view to
buying Texas cattle but no sales have
yet been consummated so far as can be
ascertained There seems to be a differ-
ence between the prices offered and those
at which cattle arc held and until con-
cessions have been made by both sides
which the pressure of business will soon
bring about no purchases will bs made
K
More cattle were lost in Arizona last
year than a great many are aware of end
it was only by the falling of late but timely
rains that decimation of the herds by
drouth similar to that in Montana by cold
in the previous winter was prevented
The stockmen are taking measures to
secure themselves from being caught
again with overstocked ranges and num-
bers cf stockmen have sold everything
marketable down to yearlings and the
epaylng knife has been brought into use
to reduce the herds
Pearsall News Mr WJL Ciawford
has madeCquite extensive preparations
for feediiSg on prickly pear and cottonseed
meal tie understand he has about
twenWrtons of meal on hand and is be
i r feiA rTAt fc gin fig to feed a large number of cattle
LTW JJKUCw LJrH fe rpvagono and teams have been busy this
week hauling cottonseed meal to Crouchs
ranch where a large number of cattle
will be fed for the spring mirket The
lumber for the troughs was hauled out
Inst week and as soon as things can be
put in readiness feeding will begin
Colonel C W B aca an old pioneer
and journalist who has abandoned all
other pursuits to citer to the beef market
of Los Angeles is enaaged in rounding
up and purchasing steers along the line
of the Prescott and Arizona Central for
shipment to California He expresses
the belief that it will not be long ere ex-
tensive stcckyards will be opened at Los
Angeles to supply the Pacific coast states
with rangeraised beef as the state each
day finis i j more and more difficult to
supply the growing demands of the beef
consumers without some such arrange-

1I Colonel H M Tayfor one of the di
rectors of the International Range Asso-
ciation hhs just received advices from
the other directors of the Association that
they have signed the letter to Colonel RG
Head president of the Association which
was sent out by Colonel Slaughter and
Mr Taylor asking Colonel Head to issue
a call for the annual meeting at Denver on
March 15 This action of the directors
a virtually fixes the date of the meeting

meeting is a
certain thing that Texas as the banner
cattle state will send a large delegation
to Denver says Mr Taylor
BEEF GOING UP
PROBABILITY THAT IT WILL ADVANCE
FROM 1 TO 2 CENTS A POUND SOON
There is little doubt that within the
nex 5 sixty days beef will advance from 1
to 2 cents a pound said Colonel J A
Haidin of Nevada to an Examiner repre-
sentative at the Russ yesterday I
think the alfilfafed or fat cattle in
Nevada will run short before the Cali
f mia cattle get fat In March and April
therefore good beef will bring high
prices Not on account of the scarcity of
cattle understand but because of the
scarcity of fat cattle
Colonel Hardin had been tslkicg of the
general condition of cattle in the two
states In the silver state in Decem-
ber sid he it was rather cold and
pleasant but during the last ten daysgjin
Humboldt county there have beei3nx
inches of snow in the valley and a heavy
fall in the mountains Stock generally
looking better now than at this time lef
year and prospects are fivorable
Beef has advanced as of course beef
cattle have and there are not so many be-
ing fed in Nevada as for several years
past Hay is higher and last year there
was short grass which accounts for it I
think there are fewer cattle now being
fed there than there were a few years
ago There have been more or less losses
and another thing sheep have in
creased
Colonel Hardin leaves tomorrow
Cottonwood and Shasta where he
for
has
cattle He will then go to Humboldt
Nevado where most of his cattle are
