capacity flour mill is kept busy grinding
aud turning out Hour tbut can-
not be excelled in any s ate Wheat
is turning out from ten to twenty bushels
per acre and those who are posted think
that the couuty will nverage fifteen
bushels per acre This for an off
year is not a bad showing In fact it is
much better than the state of Illinois
where land is worth from S30 to 100 per
acre This couuty averaged over twenty
four bushels of wheat per acre in tho
years of 1888 nnd 1889 whloi is as good
or better than wns ever done iu any
county or state in the Union outside of
crops raised by irrigation

The contractor for the erection of tho
additions to the publio school buildings
at Kyle bus commenced work and will
complete It by the middle ot September
The opera house at Jefferson has been
converted Into a school building

county will soon be underway The
Rockdale brick company have a con-
tract to supply 100000 brick part of
which are ou the grounds
The increase iu the scholnstio popula-
tion of Tyler necessitates an Increase Iu
the force ot teachers over that of last

The Improvements In the Ball high
school building at Galveston are being
pushed When finished it will present a

Agricultural and Mechanical college at
College station has been issued with
added attractions that a successful career

roll at the head of which stands written

lege does not wish to stand as a trade
school merely but a place where young
men may receive n broad aud liberal
training in nil the sciences nnd arts that
contribute to useful citizenship in the

it is the business of the college to turn
the attention of youug men from the
crowded lenrned professions to those oc-
cupations that have brought wealth aud
power to older states uud which are be-
ginning to attract atteutiou aud repay
services of trained men here This is
sought to be attained by thorough
courses of Instruction in the sciences
allied wilh continual practical applica

The cotton seed oil mill at Cleburne Is
again ou foot with n fair prospect of
success A large portion of the stock
has been taken and the farmers have
with great unanimity pledged their seed

The Galveston cotton and woolen mills
are being made ready for operation as
rapidly as possible The spindles and
looms will be at work soon
The Brenham oH mill hns been pur-
chased by the stockholders of the Bren
ham compress compauy who reeoutly
purchased the uew compress and the
purchase ot the oil mills makes their
possessions quite large
Sealy has raised all the money for a
fruit canning factory and contracts have
been signed for the buildings and ma
machinery

in view the establishment of n cannery

Almost every county In the Panhan-
dle country Is being visited by numerous
prospectors who are in search of homes
und investments The sales of land that
are daily recorded in the county offices
indicate that the majority of these are
actual settlers On almost any day

towns even at this time of the year
Everything indicates that the tide of
immigration will turn heavily into that

spekers They come from Bell Will-
iamson Ellis Johnson aud from many
of the East Texas counties The report

the health is incomparable that good
crops are made that it contnins n purely
American population Hint the county is

Marshall Tex Aug 2 A diffi-
culty in which fire men armed with
kniyes and clubs attacked one man oc-
curred at Lancaster Bros mill four-
teen miles from Marshall on the Paris
Marshall and Sabine Pass road yester-
day afternoon It was primary election
day in this county and tbe difficulty oc
curred at a voting place Ellis Pierce
was the party on whom Lee Dave and
Bill Alexander Prince aud Ed Gllcrease
made the attack Pierce was knocked
down and badly stabbed but got up
and being armed with a pistol shot three
times oue shot taking effect in Dave
Alexanders shoulder The wound is not
serious but Pierces wound may prove
fatal The parties were arrested nnd
placed under 500 bonds to appear before
the magistrate Monday for a preliminary
trial
