(•sufficient Traffic Refutations
Dear Foster:
Thi* letter is primarily for in-
formation without, in your opin
ion. it is of public interest.
It is called forth from the fact
that death and destruction on
roads and city streets from au*o
accidents are on the increase
Local efforts to control the trag
ediea are obviously inefficient
Here we have five media*. men
tioned in the June 6th Waeo
Citizen, receiving awards for pub
Molly, and in the words of s
Texas patrol official, “the saving
of lives.” Has anyone followed
upon that statement to learn of
the lives that hav* been saved?
We assume a lot In our gener
aluations and have no proof
As the number of fatalities in
crease available evidence goes
to show that lives are net saved
by publicity. To be told tha' It
is the driven “ineptitude” which
causea accidents is as vague and
pointless as are the awards of
the Safety Council. Mr Connor
is awsre of this.
To close a street to tiormal
traffic, as is being suggested
for Waco Drive, does not solve
the problem. City streets are laid
out and kept in repair at great
expenae. Yea. hailing or limit
ing traffic thereon should demin
ish the number of accidents: but
if one has a wart on his noae hr
doesn’t remove his head to be
free of it. Why so many aeci
denta on Waco Drive at Fif h
Street? A “traffic engineer” ha-
made the latter a one way street
It has been resurfaced at $24,-
°00; police pa’rol provided for
an expected increase of traffic
yet with theae improvement fea
turcs and a concentration of ef
fort at that point accidents have
more than doubled thereon, and
business 1* crippled even out to
25th
Who is drawing a nice, fat sal
ary for this type of engineering"
The writer has a low. sneak
ing feeling tha* in a couple of
years or so, and throwing to the
wind a few more thousand* of
dollars, the city will yank out
this latest example of modern
-zation No one wishes to return
to the "horse and buggy age,” but
if we haven't reached that sti |
*f maturity which assures us of
the pleasures and benefits of
progressive idealism on the
spiritual side, without the flag
rant expense, without the pro ni
nent display of business inepti-
tude, without the wholesale hu-
man slaughter in which it is now
enveloped, he should voluntarily
design and quickly embrace the
attractions of complete oblivion
Good riddance.
Sincerely.
CLARENCE CHANDLER

Judy Has Series
Of Mishaps In
Rapid Succession
Judy Chadwick has had a lot
of hard luck the last few weeks
She is now in a local hospltel
with severe burns as a result of
a Butane gas explosion last week
end.
Billie Joe Pentycuff was using
Butane to cool beer at Judy's
I-ounge, 1100 iJiSalle when the
explosion occurred. Judy ran
around behind the bar to help
and was enveloped in the flames.
Phillip Brooker. 1912 Du'ton
helped in the rescue. Both he
and Pentycuff were also injured
They had to pull Judy’a clothes
off of her.
Judy has been in the limelight
several times lately. She recent-
ly divorced John Vernon Chad-
wick. They owned a home at
3832 Charlton She has been
living at 923 South Eighth. She
is charged with attempted arson
at her home on Charlton Street
in Southwest Waeo. The fire
was quickly extinguished.
Last week also her lounge was
broken in'o. Missing was an un
known amount of money from
the juke box and other machines
in the pl»-e as well as two cases
of Schlitz beer.
