A bit of personal info. here.
We spent the weekend in
Kingsville visiting in the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Jones
and their daughter, Stephanie.
Mrs. Jones is our daughter,
Lesley. Traveled up US 77
and around Sarita and
Armstrong and even up into
Kingsville, lakes of water are
still standing on either side of
the highway; reminders that
“ALLEN” went through this
area. If you think that this
section is full of “a breath of
fresh country air”, you haven’t
smelled it lately. It is
“FISHVILLE!” Have you ever
smelled cod liver oil? That
smell scent is comming off that
mater.
Once a year in the Pharr
United Methodist Church, one
Sunday is designated Laity
Sunday. That is when the
Sunday morning’s worship
service is completely conduct-
ed by members of the
congregation or ‘lay people’.
October 12 Edwin Smith, Lay
Leader, was in charge with
assistance from Mrs. Bob
(Opal) Baldwin, Adult coordin-
ator; Mrs. John (Frances)
Riley, Administrative board
chairman; and the sermon was
given by Robert Baldwin,St-
ewardship Chairman.
Congradulations to Miss Leslie

Karl Crank. Leslie is a senior

Mrs. Bill Lemen of San Juan.
She plays the bassoon and has
been in the band for 7 years,
joining when she was in the
6ht grade.
A benefit barbeque is being
planned for Bob McCharen.
Mr. McCharen is a long-time
resident of Pharr and was
employed by Central Power
and Light for many years
before his retirement. Both he
and his wife have been in poor
health recently. Both he and

Pharr Progress
Club meets
The Progress Club met on
October 8, 1980 in the home of
Mrs. S. T. Crosby for the first
meeting of the club year. The
President, Mrs. A.G. Schlich-
ter, welcomed the members
and lead the Club collect. The
roll was called with seventeen
members answering present.
The minutes of the last
meeting were read and
approved. Following the club
business and Committee rep-
orts, the meeting was turned
over to the Program Commit-
tee, Mrs. George Hagney,
Mrs. St. Crosby and Mrs.
Dennis Riddle. They
presented the theme for the
year, “Changing Times.” they
discussed the many changes
that have taken place in the
business world, family life and
wedding ceremonies.
Following the program, the
hostesses, Mesdames Crosby,
Hagney and Riddle served
cake and coffee from lace
covered table with fall
appointments.
Ed carlson should be back at
this desk this week after a
month and a halfs absence.
Mrs. Carlson, chief Warehous-
eman for District 21 of the
Department of Transportation
& Highways, underwent
surgery in Houston early in
September and has been
recuperating at his home.
If you want to see beauty in
full bloom, look at the rose
bushes surrounding the St.
Margaret Mary Rectory at 122
West Hawk. If you want to
hear beauty, listen to the
loudspeaker atop the steeple
of St. Margaret’s Catholic
Church located next door to
the Rectory. At 7 a.m. the bells
ring the hour, at 7:05, they play
a hymn. At noon the hour is
pealed, and 12:05 another
hymn. At 5:55 and 7:05 p.m.
the bells ring again. On
Sundays, the bells, which are
set on an automatic recording,
call the people to the reading of
the Liturgy (Mass) at 7:45 and
10:30 a.m. and again at 5:45 p.m.
The Reverend Angel Diez is
the resident priest for St.
Margaret Mary Parish. Father
Angel laughigly said he had
come for 5 years and has
stayed and enjoyed it for 13.
Maybe you all are smarter
than me and know what that
emblem on the fire depart-
ment trucks is all about. I
assumed it was the official seal
of Pharr, so I started to places
where I thought I could get
information. I’m glad I had to do
some footwork for I met
friendly and helpful people
who are interested in my
hometown. First stop was the
Chamber of Commerce where
I found out that the Chamber
has their own logo for Pharr. I
met Cathy Park who is the
latest addition to the Chamber
of Commerce where I found
out that the Chamber has their
own logo for Pharr. I met
Cathy Park who is the latest
addition to the Chamber staff
and I know our Winter Texans
are going to like Cathy. She
was smiling, outgoing and
sincerely interested in helping
me. While in that part of town I
went into City Hall for a talk
with Dora Garza, City Clerk.
But at that moment she was out
of pocket. The City Manager,
Reyes Vela, said he believed I
should contact Fire Chief Cook.
I did and now you will know
too. The decal that is on the
doors of all vehicles belonging
to the Fire Department is a
very personal picture of Pharr
and was designed by Fire
Chief Burgess Cook. In the
shap of a shield, across the top
is imprinted ’US 83 The Hub
City of the Valley US 281’. It
means Pharr is at the
intersection of two major US
highways. Beneath the
lettering are pictures of
industries and envirement of
the Hub City...fruit, cotton,
palm trees, trucking. In colors
of blue, yellow, and red on
white background, this insignia
has also been made into a patch
and is worn on all the fireman’s
uniforms. Chief Cook stated
that since there is no standard
seal which must be used on
fire department vehicles, each
fire department in the Valley
has their own decal.
Saturday, October 25 the
Carnahan Elememtary School
at 317 West Gore will hold their
Halloween Carnival from 5 -
9:00 p.m. There will be game
booths, bingo, engraving of
jewelry, and a drawing for a
20-inch bike. From 6-8:00 p.m,
a Mexican Supper will be
served at $ 2.50 a plate and only
500 tickets for this supper have
been printed. A highlight of
the evening will be the
crowing of the King and
Queen. There are 22
candidates for the honor. The
1st, 2nd and 3rd grades elected
1 girl and 1 boy to represent
their home room. The vote is
one cent so the boy and girl
receiving the most money will
wear the crowns. There will
also be a raffle with the prizes
being a 75o pound hog, $ 200,00
worth of groceries and $ 100.00
of gasoline. The money earned
by this carnival will be put to
use on several needed
projects of the school when
their priority is established.
Needed are screen doors for
the cafeteria, a chain link fence
surroundind the property,
ceiling fans, a covered walk
way on sidewalks to protect
from weather and permenant
P.E. equiptment. The carnival
is sponsored by the Parent
Teachers Organization with
Angel Trevinio as President.
Mrs. Efrain (Juanity) Reyna,
Bilingual Resource Teacher, is
vice-president. Romeo Munoz
is Principal of Carnahan.
this 750 pounds of ‘on rhw
hoof pork chops n‘bacon’ will be
one of the raffle prizes at the
Halloween Carnival at Carna
han Elementary School on
