Breast Cancer Awareness Month Goes Bold with Shirts
The American Cancer
Society has a, goal of increasing
awareness on the importance of
early detection. »
"This is a bold shirt, but
when you are talking about
cancer, it is a bold disease,”
said Twila Caffey.
v As the seednd leading cause
of death in women, breast
cancer vyilj claim an estimated
2,460 lives in Texas this year.
"Boldness draws attention,
which is the point, if it brings
more awareness through
attention, we have obtained our
goal," said Susan Murphree.
Shirts for breast cancer
awareness will soon be available
and orders are currently being
taken. To place an order call
Susan Murphree at 788-7658
or Twila Caffey at 209-3300.
The shirts arc $20 each, the
Lady's shirt is pink with brown
sleeves with Save The Ta
l as' on the front and October
is Breast Cancer Awareness
Month' on the back. >
The men s shirt is black and
grey and sports the same text as
the wornens’ shiris
The shirts will be also be
sold during a sales event to be
scheduled.
Cancer awareness is a
cause which Twila Caffey and
Susan Murphree believe needs
to be publicized to raise both
awareness to potential victims
and to raise funds to continue
research.
Caffey has been working
for the cause since 1993 and
Murphree since 1997.
Caffey and Murphree
attended Relay For Life High
Plains Division Leadership
Summit in Dallas for three
days to obtain training and
knowledge to be able to Cochair
the event.
The ladies are the Cochairs,
of this year's Relay for Life which
will be held in May of 2007.
October is breast cancer
awareness month and the ladies
have joined a quest to raise
awareness of breast cancer and
to raise funds for research.
All women, age 40 and
above or with cancer history
are encouraged to have
annual mammograms," said
Murphree.
Seminole Medical District
has a mobile unit which comes
to Seminole once a month, to
receive a mammogram, see
you physician and they will
schedule the mammogram with
the mobile unit.
Lives lost to breast cancer
could be prevented through
early detections
When breast cancer is
■detected early the survival rate
could be as high as 97 percent.
"No one is immune to breast
cancer," said Murphree "It is not
common, but does happen, for a
man to get breast cancer."
Men should also be aware
of breast changes and talk
to their physician about any
concerns.
The American Cancer
Society recommends the
following screening guidelines
for the early detection of breast
cancer.
Yearly mammograms
beginning at age 40.
Clinical Breast Exams about
every three years for women in
their 20s and 30s and ever year
for women 40 and older.
Breast Self Examination
(BSE) is an option for women
beginning their 20s.
Report any breast changes"
promptly to your health care
providers.
Women at increased risk
should talk with their doctors
about the benefits and limitations
of starting mammography
screening earlier, having
additional test or having more
frequent exams.
Maintaining a healthy
body weight, staying physicdlty
active and limiting alcohol
consumption may lower the
risk of breast cancer.
Through clinical breast
exams a physician can
sometimes identify a problem a
woman may have overlooked
Though most breast
lumps are not cancerous,
only a physician can make a
diagnosis.
The Texas Department
of State Health Services
Breast and Cervical Cancer
Screening program offers
free mammograms, breast
examinations and Pap tests to
women who qualify.
In addition, Medicare helps
pay the cost of a mammogram
for women age 40 or older with
Medicare Part B.
Most health insurances will
cover all or part of the cost of a
mammogram.
This was made possible
by American Cancer Society
Cancer Action Network
(ACSCAN). '
At one time, Senators came
close to passing S. 1955 to give
insurance companies the right to
refuse to pay for mammograms,
the lobbyist group, ACSCAN,
successfully lobbied against it
and won.
According to the ACSCAN
web site "The vote was close
and the debate was fierce. But,
at the end of the day, tens of
thousands of cancer advocates
around the nation stood up and
let their Senators know the bill
would be harmful to our fight
against cancer.
"S. 1955 would have
eliminated guaranteed insurance
coverage for mammograms and
other lite-saving benefits for
cancer screening and care.
"The vote which took place
was on a process called cloture.
Before Senators can have a final
vote on a bill, they must pass
a motion which cuts off debate
and discussion or. the bill. That
cloture motion required 60
votes."
The actions of the people
contacting their Senators and
the ACSCAN group "led to
more than 40 Senators opposing
cloture, which prevented the bill
from proceeding."
For those who are
diagnosed with breast cancer
the American Cancer Society
offers Patient Service programs
such as: Reach to Recovery,
Road to Recovery, Coping with
Breast Cancer support group,
Dialogue support group and
Look Good, Feel Better.
The • American Cancer
Society is the nationwide
community-based voluntary
health organization dedicated
to eliminating cancer as a
major health problem by
preventing cancer, saving lives
and diminishing suffering from
cancer, through research,
education advocacy and
service.

Caution Urged When Making
Water Well Depth Selection
October 2006, Llano
Estacado Underground Water
Conservation District.
Land owners and drillers
need to be aware of a situation
where a permit was issued for
drilling in the Ogallala (a depth
which should not exceed 350
ft.) for water. „
After the permit was
issued, the well was drilled to
approximately 1500 ft. (into
the Santa Rosa area) vyhere
water can exceed 3,000 parts
per million in salt and chloride
levels.
Untreated levels above
1,000 part per million are
unusable for agricultural and
human purposes
Drilling through the
Ogallala and into the Santa
Rosa can have the unintended
effect of connecting a usable
water supply with an unusable
supply.
Llano Estacado needs
your help, particularly land
owners and drillers to avoid this
practice.
If a owner or driller wants
to drill to the Santa Rosa,
please let the board know at
permit time.
The completion cost,
cementing of casing, water
sampling are different and
more costly than shallow
Ogallala wells.
•It is vitally important
landowners, drillers and the
District watch out for this to
avoid problems in the future.
In other water conservation
efforts, the district has placed
