How long ago * it whan you took your driving tn>t ’
Hava you kept up with the changes in traffic laws’’
On you think you could go today, without study, and pass
the current lest for an operators license’’
If you are like most people you probably think you are a
good enough driver and have knowledge enough to pass the
drivers license lest with any problem Could you really pass'
Most of us simply develop poor driving habits and these
are very hard to break We are not really bad drivers, we are
good drivers with bad habits Like the working mother and
wife who in her morning rush to work, never puts on her
lipstick until she hits the freeway or is well on her way to the
office Then there is the man who has to have that last cup of
coffee so bad that he drinks it on the road
How many drivers use their turn signals every time they
turn' Sometimes I have followed a car for several blocks
before they see me in their rear view mirror
These and other habits are easy to form and we grow so
used to them we refuse to admit that they are wrong In fact,
those very same habits could prevent you from passing the
drivers licetnse test
Many of us think that the right to drive a car goes hand in
hand w ith all the other rights that all free citizens enjoy Like
the right to vote free speech etc If you feel that way about
your drivers license, then you are misleading yourself The
privilege to drive a vehicle is allowed you through the
courtesy of the Department of Ihiblic Safety and if you abuse
this privilege the D P S can revoke your driving privilege
The Department of Public Safety doesn't have time to re
test all of you I am going to try and help you to help yourself
You may not find any of the questions below on the regular
test but if you can answer them right you probably would do
o k on any test of driving

An excellent and timely book
to be found new In the library is
"Stalking the Good Life My
Love Affair with Nature”, by
Kwcll Gibbons who has
achieved national fame in his
survival ramping courses, his
interests in conservation and
anti-pollution
Gibbons was bom in East
Texas and early learned the
values of the flora, for food and
other things, of that beautiful
section later when his family
moved to New Mexico, he even
found that seemingly barren
land full of edible plants He
gives several methods of
transforming cactus into a
palatable dish
He has camped out, taught
others to camp, all over the
United States, in Canada, and
on island - both in the sea and in
lakes He explains the uses of
many wild plants - with pic-
tures among them are cat-
tails, day lillies < these grow
wild in many sections) pepper
grass. (I loved this as a child in
South Texas), water cress.

makes some of them sound so
good that one wants to try
them
The book is helpful for those
interested in organic foods, it
is a facinating book for anyone
For a lift in psychological
reading we recommend Jess
Lair's "I'm Not Much. Baby,
But I'm All I've Got”. At age
35. Jess Lair, well on his way to
big financial success, suffered
a heart attack He realized he
was going a route he hated and,
thanks to an understanding
wife he was able to make a
turn about in his life
He returned to school,
worked for his Ph D , and now
teaches the Carl Rogers'
philosophy of self and other
acceptance Love in the finest
sense of the term is his theme
Fiest.uno must accept and love
oneself ■ not an egotitical love
that masks other feelings, but a
genuine anti-hate that
produces self-respect
The book is based on what he
considers to be a Christian
philosophy, although it is not
moralistic in tone It is written
somewhat in the vernacular
implied by the title, thus
putting over some thoughts
that, couched in other
language, might not reach and
stimulate as well especially to
the younger generation

Fuel costs are causing
your electric bills
to be higher
Sincr last summer the price CPI, has had to pay
for oil and gas to generate electricity Lias gone up
drastically- This fact is having serious effects on your
electric bill.
For the last ten years our rates have contained
a provision for fuel cost adjustments. This means
that as our fuel costs change, your electric l>ill is
adjusted to reflect those changes.
It is an adjustment which represents the fluctu
ating differences in fuel costs which are above a base
price. The increased fuel costs are a result of short-
ages in natural gas.
There is no evidence that the fuel situation is
improving. Its cost will continue to go up, and so will
electric hills. F.ven if you continue using the same
amount of electricity, your bill could he considerably
larger because of the increased cost of fuel.
YVe are moving ahead as rapidly as possible to
build power plants that t an use energy sources other
than oil or gas. But for the near future we must rely
on those two shortage-plagued fuels. Although we
buy them as economically as possible and use them
as efficiently as we can, their increasing cost is going
to show up on your electric bill.
That makes the wise use of electricity more im
portant than ever.
