TIPS FOR
0UTD00RSMEN
Finding Fish is Easy
Finding white bass is easy,
vproviding you know how. Per-
haps the easiest way on most
of Texas' large impoundments
is to watch for the bird#;. When
you see a flock of gulls diving
down into the water, it in at
sign that the whites are chas-
ing shad. And that's a cuo
for you to chase the fish. Cast
a heavy, fast sinking spoon
near the edge of the activity.
You'll discover that the whites
usually are deep down and
dining on the injured shad that
sink to the bottom.
i- Once in awhile you’ll' latch
onto a big old lazy black bars
down there, tod.
Canoed Bails For Cats
liooking for a good way to
bait your favorite fishing hole?
Try canned • dog food, pre-
ferably the kind that makes
gravy by adding a little water.
Bunch a hole in each side
of the can with a nail or an
ice pick. Tie a rock to the can
and drop it into the water.
Or, If you use the kind that’s
served hi a sack, drop It Into
a loosely knit potato or citrus
fruit rack, weight it down good
then lower it into the water.
Catfish love dog food.
Fishing Iht Points
When you’re fishing around
points it’* always safe to leave
your outboard motor running.
That way you can avoid
slamming into the bank when
a gust of wind hit* your boat.
Another good idea is to re-
verse the motor and troll
-back ward*.
Surest Way to CatchFiah
Cast close to the bank and
work out.
This is one of the surest
methods of catching fish.
Especially is this true when
fishing rocky shorelines.
Cast against the rock and
let the hire fall into the water.
Give it a moment to sink.then
jiggle the badt.
If there is a n.^i around It
very likely will take your lute.
Kaaps Sinkers From Slipping
If you use split-shot sinkers
here’s a godd way to keep them
from slipping. Insert a short
piece of mibber band Into Ihe
slot In the sinker, along dfith
the line. Then crimp the shot
ov«t the rubber band.
ThiA Will hold the line Hght.

Rabbit hunting is almost a
loat sport in Texas.
1 mean honent-to-good ness
rabbit hunting.
Sure, some hunter will be
out after doves or quail and
will plunk an occasional bunny.
But how many Izaac Walton
Leaguers do you know who go
hunting strictly for rabbits?
Very few, 1 betcha.
Why this is tiue, I don’t
know. Rabbit hunting offers
some of the finest sport to be
had in the great outdoors.
Perhaps it is because the
bunny is protected by game sea-
sons in Texas. You can hunt
cottontails and jackrabbits any-
time. Somehow, by throwing
the sport open to anyone, any
time, it sort of takes something
out of the pleasure.-----
But it shouldn’t. Rabbit
hunting actually is a burnt#
Built."WHen dilher hunting sea- *
sons are closed and the Winter

wondering what in blazes he
can do, their is great sport t6
be had in scouting the woods
for rabbits.
Believe it ,or not, rabbit \
hunting can be as simple or as j
complicated as you want -it to
peabng aspects of the sport.
Theie are deluxe rabbit hunts \
and plain vanilla rabbit hunts, j
and just about everything in:
between, depending on your
pleasure.
One of the most enjoyable:
means of seeking Mr. Rabbit
is with a dog or dogs. Any
canine that will chase rabbits
can be used In the sport But
when you talk about rabbit
hunting, you sort of think
about Bassets and, Beagles
These are the rabbit-hunting
hounds. ^
Basically, both accomplish
the same purpose. Idea behind
rabbit hunting with dogs is to
flush the bunny into the Open
where the hunter can get hi*
tights on it. But dog* are not
alike Jn their hunting methods, i
Beagles pursue rabbits mostly
by slghtr' Baskets by went.
When a Beagle spooks a rab-
bit into the open, the dog takes
out right on the heels of the
bunny, it* leg* » blur «f mo-
tion. Since the Beagle has short
legs it can’t stay up with a
rabbit in a foot race However,
this really > is an advantage ra-
ther than a disadvantage If
the dog makes the rabbit run
too fgst, it will take off In-
stantly and soon be out of gun
range.
Experienced hunters know
that a rabbit often will circle
and come back to the spot
whete It started. Thus the1
hunter stands still and waits,)
listening U> the high chop-chop
hark of the pursuing Beagle |
Chances are the bunny vkill
soon come hippity-hopping back
in view again.
A Basset hound moves along
with its nose almost dragging
thfe ground. Seldom does it ldok
up to see where it i$ goibg
When a rabbit is spooked by
a Basset, the bunny sort of
hops off leisurely in front of
the dog, always keeping well
out in front,'but not hurrying.
The hunter tagging along usu-
ally can get some fineoihuotmg
opportunities.
But dogs are not absolutely
necessary to make a rabbit
shoot a memorable event. If you
don't believe this just take out
your trusty shotgun or .22 rifle
and walk through any wooded
are# known to be inhabited by
rabbits. Keep your eyes alert.
Be on the lookout fbr one to
jump suddenly into view . . . of-
ten from almost under your
feet. icu
Best time to hunt, is real
early in the morning or late
in the afternoon. During these
periods the rabbits arc up and
about, feeding. Then they are
more susceptive to a stalk. In
the middle of day they bed
ci..m in < lumps of brush and
you*i3fnost Have to step on one
to make it show itself.
Wnether you prefer a shot-
gun or a 22 rifle is simply a
matter of personal preference.
A shotgun loaded with No e
shotshells is more deadly at
short range and on running
shots, but the .22 rifle i« more,
sporting. Get your 22 out often
during 'the year, foe a IfH’h-
rabbit shooting, and- you don't
have any trouble connecting
with a deer when the big-game
season roils around.
Another facet of rabbit hunt-
ing, usually ignored, is that
cottontails are wry good to
eat. A young, tender cottontail
is especially delectable.
Skin one bv making a cut
crossways right, on .the back-
bone, insert your fingers under
its skin on each side of the
opening and spread your arms
apart. Half-of the skin will peeJ
down over the hindquarters,
the other half over the head.
Cut the meat into chunks
and fry it just as you would
Southern fried chicken, in a
deep skillet brimming with lard
and laced with some bacon
drippings Or if you prefer,
boil and later add dumplings.
Ope session at the dinner
table when cotton tail rabbit
i« the specialty'' of the house
and youll be a rabbit-hunttng
convert for life.
