J„s* Ramirez y familla estuvte- week b7 F- E Wilson manager of
ron en Mathis a fines de semana j tbe Brownsville o f f 1 c e of the
_„___ ! Board. Under the revised program
i j such workers have an opportunity
to get lifetime monthly benefits.
I These benefits will become payable
I on January 1, 1940, instead of in
! 1942, as scheduled in the original
l law.
Commenting on these changes
Wilson said: “Termination of the
oayment of lump-sum benfits, up
, to now payable to workers at age
65, is the only revision of the old-
age insurance program to take ef-
fect simultaneously when the a-
mendmenta are signed by the
President. The new and liberalized
j plan, while discontinuing this kind
! of benefit, enables all workers in
1 covered employment—regardless of
whether they reach 65 before or
after 1940—to receive monthly ben.
j efits if they meet a few simple re-
) quirements.
j “Our estimates indicate that ap-
proximately 485,000 persons past
1 65 will be entitled to monthly ben-
j efits in 1940, and that the benefits
I payable during the year will exceed
SllO.OuO.OOO. This total includes'
I payments to retired wage earners,!
plus the additional benefits which i
* the amended plan provides for |
wives and dependent children of
retired workers, and for the wi-
j dows. orphans, or dependent par-
• ents of workers who die. Under the
old plan, lump-sum benefits would
probably not have amounted to
more than $30,000,000 in 1940. in- 1
j luding both payments to workers
reaching 65 and death payments.”
Representatives of the board
throughout the country hav^ begun j
to notify wage earners currently!
applying ior lump-sum payments
that the new program may enable
them to receive monthly benefits
after aJnuary 1, 1940 Workers who
have already received lump-sum
payments may also be eligible for
monthly benefits after that date.
The Board, Wilson said, plans to
notify both this group and
others over 65 who. from its wage
| records, appear likely to be eligi-
ble.
