Open to the community of Abilene. No
admission charge. It is hoped that this
will develop into a festival of summer
productions from various colleges and
universities, with ACU as the host.
8. EVERYBODY LOVES OPAL* --Summer Buffet
Theatre. The whole family will love the
exploits of John Patrick's eccentric,
Opal Kronkie, July 20-21, 27-28, 1990.
*New production
9. "THE WORD" ON STAGE* --Due to the
phenomenal success of Dezarae Gaines'
performance of blind hymn writer, Fanny
J. Crosby, the ACU Theatre will stage an
encore during Bible Teachers Workshop,
July 22-24, 1990.
All nine productions were produced by Lewis, with
three productions being designed by him --The
King and I, Othello, and Cyrano de Bergerac.
Regarding Cyrano, Lewis directed and designed the
scenery for this production from a new
translation which he commissioned from Stewart
Arnold of Turin, Italy. Using this new prose
version, Lewis "freely adapted" the classic
Rostand love story into a new contemporay style
more readily understood and appreciated by modern
audiences.
The object of this season as a new department was
to set a standard of great breadth and variety
for theatre majors and patrons of the future.
At the conclusion of its first year, as a full-
fledged department, the Department of Theatre
presented 54 performances to an audience of
nearly 30,000 patrons.
*New production
Note: I realize this is somewhat lengthy, but
necessary to clarify my work in this first year
as a new department. Therefore, the descriptions
of the various productions was necessary to
understand and appreciate the rationale involved.L.F.
