nied by Mr John Ollmor Speed has re
ccntly arrived In this eonntry and reports
Uiat tho heavy piellmltiary work con-
nected with this national undertaking Is
completed Tho executive council In
London has had offered to It by soveral
of tho most Important railway companies
In Kn liiiul an excellent and eligible site
exceeding twenty acres In extent In the
heart ot tho most fashionable
nnd aristocratic residential por-
tion ot London at Karls
Court Kensluglou Tho railway com
panies are showing great Interest In the
undertaking and are offcilnpr every fa-
cility to tho management Tiioro will be
no less than three railway stations upon
tho grounds of the exhibition ihclf com

ways ot Great llrltaln Within ono hour
by rail of tho exposition grounds U n
resident population of about ten millions
and within live minutes by rail there will
be held next year the Urlttsh colonial and
Indian exhibition at South Kensington
One excellent feature connected with the
selection of 180C for tho holding of thl
the first exhibition overbad by tho United
States beyond tho limits of the national
territory Is the fact that tholimlish peo
plo will then celebrate tho jubilee of
Queen Victoria Another Is the fact
that tho Urltlsh colonial and In-
dian exhibition above referred to
is the last of the annual exhibitions
which under the able management of the
council appointed by the Prince of Wales
have been held during the past few years
and had tho American exhibition not been
held next year Americans would have
been tho only rugllshspeaklng race
whose exhibits would not have been
biought to the notice of Kuvopeans as
the Trinse of Wales exhibition at South
Kensington In 18b6 will represent the pro-
ducts of all other Kugllshspeaking peo-
ple The main building of the American
cshibttlon will bo commenced on the 15th
of December and completed before the
1st of March next It will bo constructed
of Iron and glass with a total length of
1100 feet the superficial aiea covering
eight acres The building will be divided
by sections Into seven avenues named af-
ter eminent Americans and crossed by
fifteen streets On each side oi tho main

the east containing u number of small
buildings nnd chalets erected by tho vari
ous states and territories whilo that on
the west side will be devoted to tho Art
gallery and tho Historical hall A spe-
cial building will also be provided to re-
ceive a unique collection of exclusively
American hunting trophies which has
been offered to Uio executive runnel of
the exhibition by a committee of Jingllsh
gentlemen among whom may bu named
the Karl of Mayo the Kail of Dnnvnven
Lord Walslngham Sir Samuel Ilaker A
V Vivian Ksq M 1 Morton Ficwcn
Ksq nnd Mr KdwuidNoith lluxton Urn
wellknown chairman of tho school board
for London and other gentlemen
The Western girdon will contain a
largo restaurant 770 feet long by 15 feet
wide Including an American bar of
greater magnitude than any at present
existing In front of tho tostaurant will
bo an avenue 1200 feet long of American
conifers and shrubs with a fountain in
the center larger than tho one at Ver-
sailles and a tower at the farther end 200
feet high from which extensive views
over tho city of London and surrounding
country can bo obtained American ele-
vators which aro as yet only partially
known In Kurope will carry visitors to
the top of tho Washington tower as It
will be called and at night a powerful
electric light will Illuminate the grouuds
from tho top of this observatory Tho
number of paintings which will bo exhib-
ited by American aitlsts will lie limited
to 1000 Art committees uro now being
formed in New York London and
larls in connection with this Im-
portant department of the ex-
hibition which will further comprise a
historical hall containing paintings of
American subjects by eminent Kuiopean
artists There will also be an Iudlau vil-
lage covering one and threequarters
acres devoted to a full llltistiatlon of the
modes of life of the red men Kevcrting
to the main building which will exceed
in length that of tho main building of the
centennial exhibition of 1871 It may be
mentioned that ono nventlo will be de-
voted to the products of Americas soli in
climatic sequence Kntering the United
States as It were from the harbor of
New York the visitor from tho Old World
will have tho opportunity of inspecting
collections illustrating tho wealth and
civilization of tho cntlro country from
east to west Thecoudltlon of tho respec-
tive agricultural mineral grazing
and Manufacturing localities will bo
shown In a manner which will bo intel-
ligible to all and will enable tho
visitor to establish a trustworthy
basis for judgment as to their re-
spective advantages Tho space allotted
to manufacturers exhibits will illustrate
the development in every branch of that
Inventive genius which has reached so
high a point In tho United States Kspeclnl
attention is being given to a full exhibi-
tion ot proccf scs at work and these will
be aided by the use of steam gas and
hydraulic power which will bo provided
for exhibitors whilst tho whole building
will bo brilliantly illuminated by elec-
tricity Thirtyset en commissioners
have boon actively engaged throughout
the United States for some time past and
the exnlblts thev aro getting together
will make the exhibition truly national In
character The 1nited States govern
ment will also be invited to send an ex-
hibit nnd It would seem that no moro in-
structive one could bo shipped than that
which was sent last winter to the worlds
exhibition at New Orleans Such nn ex-
hibition would noi only open the oyes of
Europeans but also of tho llritlsh colo
nial and Indian visitors who will flock
by thousands to London next year
botli as to the wealth and
resources of the United Stales and of the
Immense progress ruado in the manufac-
turing Industries in this country during
the last half centnty The reports from
the principal United States consuls In
Kurope arc unanimous in their exprcs
Blon of tho benefits which must accrue to
the United States from this new and in-
teresting departure In exhibitions At
previous ot on international character

I This ex
hlbtilon will doubtless attract ns many
visitors as If not moro than the tbre
exhibitions which have bcon held at
South Kensington London In 1883188
nnd 1885 and which havo boon great suc-
cesses it will tend to draw the atten-
tion ot foreign capita not only to the
agricultural and mining interest of the
United States but will afford Amerloau
manufacturers such aw opportunity as
they have never yet had In taking a firm
foothold In iho markets of the old world
One practicable bnneflt and outcome of
tho exhibition will doubtless be that n
permanent American market will be estab-
lished in London In which American man-
ufactures and products may be obtained
by tho teeming millions ot Kurope just In
the same way as Covont garden market
cenlndlrcs the supply ot fruits and llow
ers for the population of Orcat llritaln
A number ot tho leading learned societies
of Oreat llrltaln havo offered hospitality
to the corresponding societies ot Amer
ica and It In expected that a number ot
the latter will hold their annual conven-
tions for 18Si In the llritlsh metropolis
Arrangements are now being maflo for
tho Thirteenth regiment of Brooklyn N
Y to visit London next year in com
memoratUm of Queen Victorias jubilee
This will bo tho first organized trip
abroad of an American military organiza-
tion
In tho whole history of exhibitions there
has not been constituted such a numerous
select and representative council as that
which has been formed bylhcKugllshmcn
for tho purpose of holding out tho right
hand of friendship and greeting to their
kin beyond the sea uud which will
welcome Americans In London next year
This council of over 1000 members com-
prises eight dukes as vicepresidents ov-
er fifty peers of the realm some 300 bar-
onets and knights the presidents of all
the learned societies of Great Britain the
mayors of nil the principal cities of the
llritlsh isles and a galaxy ot some 500 of
the best known nnd most representative
men In the worlds of literature art law
commerce and finance The American
general council which has been formed
this year on this side of the Atlnutlc com-
poses twentylive of tho governors of the
principal states a largo number of mem
bets of congress the mayors ot tho prin-
cipal cities of the United States ami
about 250 representative gentlemenprom
inent in tho various walks of life
Last August at tho request of tho ex-
ecutive council tho late secretary of the
American exhibition Gen C It Norton
sent In his rchlgnatlon which was at
once accepted and Gen Norton has no
longer any connection with the exhibition
directly or indirectly Since the llrht of
this mouth Gen Norton has been suc-
ceeded by Mr John Gilmer Sliced as sec-

general has recently visited soveral sec
tions of the United States and has re
ceived on every hand excellent reports
from the various commissioners lletore
Mr Whitleys letttin to London two
or three weeks hence selection
will have been made ot some distin-
guished American to fill the Important
position of president of the exhibition
and four other gentlemen will also be
chosen amongst our eminent citizens to
serve as vicepresidents Theie is every
prospect ot this admirable mules taking
