KIWANIS CLUB
Father Gregory Kuczmanski,
O.M.I., St. Margaret’s Catholic
Church, brought a Christmas mes-
sage as the program at the Pharr
Kiwanis Club Dec. 23rd meeting in
the Kiwanis bldg.
Father Kuczmanski reviewed the
history of the celebration of Christ-
mas. It was originally an ancient
Roman holiday or feast day. Sev-
eral hundred years later, the date
was used by Christians to celebrate
the birth of Christ.
The first Christmas tree was dec-
orated with apples, depicting Adam
and Eve in the garden, he said. The
first Christmas tree of modern
times was in Germany. Candles
were placed around the tree, in-
stead of on the tree.
Christmas was not a holiday in
this country until the' middle 1800s,
he pointed out.
First Vice President Jim Ger-
nentz introduced the speaker.
Visiting Kiwanians were Dale Wil-
son, Greater Lodi, Calif.; Dennis
Riddle, McAllen.
Guests included Jimmy Jones of
Llano, former Pharr resident; Juan
C. Martinez and David R. Marti-

tinez.
