Right lu'ii' is tin1 second principle
of planning ihe new house. It should
bo designed to t;t Itsite. If this is
done it will he an ornament to its com*
munio and a permanent satisfaction
to its owner, as well as a first-class
inve dmenf.
The first principle is more likely to
receive attention because its necessity
is more clearly defined in the mind
.,i the layman and its lYTeil more im
mediately apparent. /This principle is
that of fitting the house to the family
which is to occupy it. considering not
only tile present, hut also the future
requirements.
Because of its low, squat lines a
bungalow is well suited to a some-
what elevated site and a terrac \ such
as tlie one on which the house is set
is a good substitute where sufficient
natural elevation is lacking. The ef-
fect of the steps leading to the terrace
is good. The porch of brick, decorated
with rough bowlders, with one-half
covered and the ollo-i' half open, is
well suited to the style of the house.
The shingled siding, laid wide, expos-
ed rafters and composition roof form
a pleasing combination.
The front entrance opens directly
into the large living room. This is
the most common pra dice today with
small houses, as it saves much space
which was formerly devoted to a lit
tie used hallway, the latter hardly
being necessary where there is no
need of providing for a stairway to a
second floor. At one end of the living
room is brick in the same style as
the porch.
Almost as large as the living room
is the dining room, which occupies the
opposite side of the house, the two
rooms extending clear across the
front. Both rooms are well lighted
with large windows on two sides. .lust
hack of these rooms is a hall extend-
ing the width of the house and with
the- bahktpom at one end and a large
pantry at the other.
Across the rear of the house, and
opening rtff this hall, are two bed-
rooms. the basement stair and the
kitclu?n. Both bedrooms are of a
comtortable size and are provided
with closets. There is also a linen
closet near the bathroom.
The kitchen is equipped in the most
up-to-date manner with a fine sink
set under broad windows Jiuilt-in cup-
boards and an ice box \wdch may be
filled from the back porch. Here al-
i so is a stair which leads to the attic
space above and beside the porch is
| an outside stair to the basement.
On the whole, tlit? plan described is
j well designed to take care of the tani-
I ily of limited size and afford it an
j abundance of comfort and satisfac-
! tion.

The modern home that is equipped
with convenience outlets affords its
owner means for taking advantage of
the portable luminaries that are de-
nied those who are compelled to use
the old-fashioned method of attaching
the cord to ceiling or wall units. True,
the man who resorts to the latter
method of using portables is able to
employ them to some extent, but he
is limited hv the height of the ceiling
or wall unit in his arrangement of
the portable unless he lias an unusu-
ally long cord, and that is even more
unsightly than the shorter one.
The potential home builder the archi-
tect and the building contractor are
all interested in the comfort of the
ultimate occupants of the home, or
they should be, and one of the most
essential means to bring about that
enjoyment is the handling of these

granted that the house will he wired
for electricity if it is available, so why
not make full use of the countless
benefits gained from it? The way
to do that is to install convenience
outlets, plenty of them.
Their availability makes possible
the use of the portable luminaire,
which means so much in the proper
illumination and, therefore, complete
enjoyment of the home. And the port-
able finds its use in practically every
room in the house, living room, bed-
rooms, dining room, den, music room.
on the porch, etc.
in the living room, much comfort
and decorative value are to be ob-
tained from the use of the bridge
type for reading, card playing, sew-
ing. etc. The floor portable and the
table partable are indispensable. The
bedsides, for attaching to me head of
the bed. for use on a (able when « sub-
dued light Is desired, anil in the dining
room they find their place on the buf-
fet, the serving table, etc.
Care should be taken in the selec-
tion of these illuminaires, and their
color and size should be considered
carefully before a final dec*ion is
made. The size, shape and character
of the room in which the “nip is to be
used are determining actors In their
selection.
