Thomas Page Sr. Inducted
Into the Hall of Honor
Thomas M. Page Sr. of San Antonio
has been inducted into the Bearkat Hall
of Honor at Sam Houston State Uni-
versity in Huntsville.
He was recognized during halftime
ceremonies at the Sam Houston State-
Northwestern State football game at
Bearkat Stadium on Saturday, OcL 31.
One of the largest homecoming crowds
ever saw their alma-mater defeat North-
western State 34-7.
Later that day, an induction dinner
was held at Jackson Place honoring
Page and three other inductees to the
Bearkat Hall of Honor. This swelled the
ranks of inductees to the prestigious
hall of honor to 69.
Page was a former Bearkat Head Foot
ball Coach fnm 1968-1971. His .51
winning percentage is fourth best
among former coaches. He came to Sam
Houston as assistant coach in 1958 and
was a key member of the coaching staff
in the Bearkat’s 1964 National Cham-
pionship Team.
A native of Alabama, Page is now
president of the Tom Page and Co., Inc.
Construction Co. in San Antonio.
He received a framed certificate and
will have his name engraved on a plaque
in the university's coliseum.
Those present to share his joyful
moments were his wife, Irene; his son
and family, Tom and Jacque Page and
daughters Jana and Kara of Rio Medina;
and his daughters and their families,
Betty and Darrell Steubing and children
Krista, Will and Shawn of Boeme; and
Irene and Mike Robbins of San An-
tonio.
Party Honors Mrs. Boehme
A happy time was had Sunday, Oct.
25, when 80 relatives and friends gather-
ed at the home of Matt and Wilfreen
Saathoff to celebrate the 90th birthday
of Mrs. August (Millie) Boehme.
Her children and their spouses hosted
the barbecue dinner and get-together.
They included Wilfreen and herhusband,
Matt Saathoff of Quihi; Leora and
husband, C.J. Mangold, and Lester
Boehme and his wife, Helen, all of
Hondo.
Also on hand were Millie's husband,
August; her brother Oscar Haby of San
Antonio, and her sister Mrs. Ralph
(Selma) Beck of Rio Medina. Brother
and sister-in-law, Floyd and Hazel Haby
of Castroville were on a trip and were
unable to attend. Numerous nephews
and nieces from the Haby side were
among those bringing best wishes for
many more birthdays.
A birthday cake, half white and half
chocolate, was decorated with red roses.
At a young 90 years, the honoree has
14grandchildren,22great-grandchildren,
and one great-great-grandchild.
On Monday, Oct. 26, which is her
birthday, Mrs. Boehme received another
gift when granddaughter Paula and her
husband, Paul Nowlin became parents
of a baby boy, adding another member
to the family tree.
A belated Happy Birthday to Margaret
O'Sullivan of Castroville who was 100
years young recently. Still very active,
Mrs. O'Sullivan attends mass regularly
at St. Louis Church and loves to partici-
pate in the Golden age parties held
monthly. On her birthday, Monday,
Oct. 26, in Castroville, Mayor Virginia
Suehs declared the day "Margaret
O'Sullivan Day" in her honor. Congratu-
lations, may you have many returns of
the day, Mrs. O'Sullivan.
(Yours truly feels especially honored
since I have some beautiful crocheted
work that Mrs. O'Sullivan gave me
when I did a senior citizen story about
her several years ago. It is beautifully
done and adds a special touch to our
home.)
A group of local hunters recently re-
turned from a two-week hunt in the
Southwest comer of Colorado above
Dolores. These included Royce Groff,
Dean Keller, Geoffrey Groff, Terry
Beck, Emil Zinsmeyer, Bemie Fournier,
Frank J. Keller, Larry Barger, Keith
Schott, Randy Boehme, Terry Groff,
Bennie De Los Santos and Lynn
Boehme. Lucky ones making a kill
were Keith Schott, Geoffrey Groff and
Bennie De Los Santos.
Officers re-elected at the membership
drive and meeting of Medina Valley
Young Farmers included Glenford
Boehme, president; Jerry Middendorf,
vice president; Curtis Boehme, secre-
tary; David Tschirhart, treasurer; and
Tom Page, reporter.
Reverend Charles Neumann is a mem-
ber of the panel of Catholic, Orthodix,
Episcopalian, Lutheran, Methodist and
Presbyterian representatives who dis-
cussed the role of the Virgin Mary in
ecumenical dialogue on Sunday. The
symposium was held in SL Marys
University's Treadway Auditorium.
Father Neumann says mass on Saturday
evenings at St. Francis Chapel at Me-
dina Lake and is well-known in this
area.
Dinner and Party Honors
Two-Year Old Stephanie
A dinner and party was held Sunday,
Nov. 1, for Stephanie Caron in honor
of her second birthday. It was hosted by
her parents Tracy and Sheila Caron and
held at their home in George West.
Stephanie's grandmother, Betty Bal-
zen, baked a cake which was shared with
everyone attending. Those joining the
birthday girl in celebration were her
parents; her maternal grandparents,
Wayne and Betty Balzen of Pleasanton;
her maternal great-grandmother, Mrs.
Dolphia Boehme of Rio Medina; her pa-
ternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Caron Jr. of Tilden; her paternal
great-grandparents, Mr.and Mrs. Charles
Caron Sr. of Tilden; aunt, Janet Balzen
of Pleasanton; and aunt/godmother and
uncle, Deanna and Michael Mangold of
Quihi; and godfather, Jeff Caron from
Tilden.
Ammon lacis Return to Rome
Gianni and Phyllis Ammoniaci and
their baby daughter, Deborah Marie, de-
parted Monday for their home in Rome,
Italy.
Phyllis arrived in LaCoste in late
August and stayed with her parents,
Floyd and Myrtle Santleben, awaiting
the birth of her first child. Deborah
Marie arrived Sept. 26 at Methodist
Hospital, San Antonio, and Major
Ammoniaci joined his wife and baby
two days later, coming from Rome
where he is a test pilot stationed at the
Experimental Test Pilot Center.
Anxiously awaiting the first glimpse
of their new granddaughter are Deborah
Marie's paternal grandparents Pietro and
Louisa Ammoniaci of Forli, Itali, along
with great-grandmother Aurora Gagliotti
of Florence, Italy. It will be a happy
homecoming for all across the waters,
but I'm quite certain the little tot will
be greatly missed by grandpa and granny
Santleben.
Homemade flour tortillas, carne
guisado, guacamolc salad, hot sauce,
strawberry short cake, ice cream, iced
tea and margaritas were served by
hostess Dorothy Jurcak at the meeting
of the Green Glen Bunco Club on Oct.
22. Prize winners were 1st, Val Knoll;
2nd, Maxine Haby; bunco, Olga
Brooks; consolation, Anna Quintana;
and booby, Cindy Martin.
It's 15 grandchildren for Matt and
Wilfreen Sathoff with the arrival of
Bonnie Sue McGill on June 12. Bonnie
Sue's mother is the former Joan
Saathoff. Congratulations to all.
Filomcna Lerma is enjoying a stay
with her son and daughter-in-law, Ernest
and Yvonne Lerma and children Bron-
son, Helen and Weston in Rio Medina.
Weston is very pleased to have grand-
mother Lerma here since she makes
those delicious flour tortillas he so
dearly loves to caL
Turkey Games Party
The St. Louis Religious Education
Program is sponsoring their first annual
Turkey Games Party. The date is
Sunday, Nov. 8, from 2 until 5 p.m. at
Koenig Park Hall, Castroville. Infor-
mation is available after the weekend
masses or from St. Louis Rectory or
Religious Education Office (538-2517
or 538-2267). Chalupas, pies, cakes,
cookies, sodas, coffee, tea and turkey
prizes will be available.
Golden Age Party
Over 30 people were on hand for the
Oct. 28th Golden Age Party at Naegelin
Hall, Castroville. Sponsored by St.
Ann's Society, the afternoon was spent
playing bingo and pitch.
Those having birthdays in October
and November were honored. These in-
cluded Mrs. Margaret O'Sullivan
(100th), Alice Salzman, Theresa Stein,
Inez litis, Harriett Coyle, Bert Pope,
and Alice Batot. Each received a greet-
ing card, and a piece of cake decorated
with a candle.
Refreshments of chicken salad, ma-
caroni salad, cheeses, crackers, grapes,
cakes, cookies, coffee and tea were
served.
There will be no party in November.
The next party will be December 2.
Those who will be attending are asked
to arrive about 11:30 a.m., so the meal
can be served at 12 o'clock noon.
Turkey and dressing will be provided.
Those attending are requested to bring
salads, vegetables or desserts to com-
plete the meal.
Bonnie Sue McGill
Baptized Nov. 1
St. Monica's Catholic Church was
the setting for the baptism of little
Bonnie Sue McGill, daughter of Joan
McGill and Richard McGill on Sunday,
Nov. 1, 1987. Godparents for the infant
are Dean Stewart and Madelyn Schott
After the ceremony, family and
friends enjoyed dinner at Joan's apart-
ment to celebrate the occasion. Bonnie
Sue's cousin, Zachary Stein, also cele-
brated his fifth birthday the same day.
Zachary, whose parents are Wayne and
Yvonne Stein, shared his birthday cake
with all his relatives on the Saathoff
side of the family.
Maternal grandparents to Bonnie Sue
and Zachary are Matt and Wilfreen
Saathoff of Quihi. Zachary's paternal
grandparents are Harvey and Gladys
Stein of Hondo.
Last Thursday, women from through
out Medina County traveled by chartered
bus to attend a Quilt Show at George
Brown Convention Center in downtown
Houston. Among those attending from
Rio Medina and Castroville were
Florence Hoffmann, Margie Haby,
Doris Schuchart, Mary Lee Jungman,
Charlene Snavely, Mary Semlinger,
Jean Ducos, Jo Ann Burges, Faustina
Sharp, Gertrude Hoog, Marilyn Stein,
Beverly Tschirhart, Gloria Kennedy,
Madelyn Van De Walk, Bonnie Keller,
Irene Jungman, Polly Huegele, Jolcen
Foster, Doris Heineke and Margaret
Tondre. (I hope I got everyone's name,
if not please call me). The bus departed
from Houston Square in Castroville at
7:30 a.m. and stopped in Schulenburg
for coffee enroute to the show. The
group arrived home about 8:30 p.m.
after a fun day.
litis Twins Baptized
In St. Louis Church
A double baptism ceremony was held
Saturday evening, Oct. 3, 1987 in St.
Louis Catholic Church, Castroville, for
Katherine Elizabeth and Kayla Melissa,
twin daughters of Jerome and Tammy
litis of Corpus Christi. Conferring the
sacrament was Jerome's first cousin,
Father Gerald Haby of Kilgore.
Godparents for the twins are Frances
Gravell of San Antonio and John Hart
of Longview. Frances and John arc aunt
and uncle to the infants.
A reception was held at the home of
the twins' grandparents, William and
Inez litis, in Castroville following the
ceremony. All the litis children and
their families were present including
Jerome, Tammy and the twins; John
and Phyllis Hart of Longview; Wayne
and Lisa litis and girls, Lcxie and Katie
of Corpus Christi; Lawrence litis of
College Station; Mike litis of Castro-
ville; and Gary and Frances Gravell and
children, Jonathan and Lauren of San
Antonio. Other guests included Mrs.
Marie Haby of Rio Medina, and her
son. Father Gerry Haby of Kilgore,
Julie Lyssy of San Antonio, and Mr.
and Mrs. Bob Barton and son, Bob from
Bulverdc.
On Sunday, the litis family attended
the golden anniversary party honoring
Mr. and Mrs. Leo Echtlc at LaCoste.
The Ralph Beck family got together
for a day of fun at the Millard Schuchart
Ranch over the weekend. Those attend
ing were Ralph and Selma Beck, Elroy
and Claudia Beck and family, David and
JoAnn Beck and family, Nclis (Butsy)
and Jacqueline Beck and family, Mrs.
Edna Schuchart, Darryl and Kim
Schuchart and family, Keith and Pam
Sterner and family, and the hosts
Millard and Inell Schuchart.
Urestl Infant Receives
"Waters of Baptism"
Kathryn Jordan Uresti, infant daugh-
ter of Mary and Jesse Uresti Jr. of Von
Ormy, received the waters of baptism
during a ceremony Sunday, Oct. 25,
1987, in the Catholic Church of the
Sacred Heart in Von Ormy. Father
Xavier Dietz was celebr? . ror the cere-
mony which took place during the
mass.
Godparents for Kathryn Jordan are
Mike and Gwen Taylor of Castroville.
They are uncle and aunt to Kathryn.
Following the church services, a
brunch was hosted by Kathryn's parents
at the Uresti home. Grandparents,
uncles, aunts, and numerous cousins
were present.
Kathryn's grandparents are Delvin and
Evengeline Bippert of Hwy. 90, east of
Castroville, and Susie and Jesse Uresti
Sr. of Von Ormy. Great-grandparents
are Oscar and Alma Bippert of San An-
tonio, and Mrs. Florence Kempf of Cas-
troville.
Following years of tradition, Kathryn
wore the baptismal dress which has
been in the Kempf family for 90 years.
It was made by Kathryn's great-great-
grandmother Kempf for her First child
Andrew Kempf, who resides in
Castroville.
Jerome and Tammy litis and their
twin daughters, Katherine Elizabeth and
Kayla Melissa , spent the weekend with
Jerome's parents, William and Inez litis
in Castroville.
Rio Medina will have a new resident.
Morgan James Huegele Jr. arrived at a
San Antonio hospital on Halloween
Day, Oct. 31. Warmly welcoming the
little tot are his happy parents, Morgan
and Connie Huegele, and his maternal
grandmother, Dora Martinez of Castro-
ville. Mother and baby will be returning
home from the hospital this week.
"Under the Harvest Moon" was the
theme of this year's Toast of the Town
held at the Convention Center in San
Antonio last Tuesday evening. Folks
from the Castroville, Rio Medina and
LaCoste areas were in attendance. Some
of those tasting the delicious dishes
were Vera Ayala, Susan and TcrTy
Trevino, James Zinsmeyer, Kenneth
Echtle, Sammy and Yvonne Tschirhart,
Laura Mae McVay, Kyle McVay, Lee
McVay, Norman and Marie Jungman
and daughter, Hugo Stolte and Phillip
and Maureen Tschirhart. Vera reported
her favorite food turned out to be
crawfish with noodles. Po-Po also ser
ved up some very tasty fried chicken.
While others chose food favorites,
Kenneth Echtle was quick to decide the
most enjoyable part of his evening was
when the three beautiful blonde Cone
Sisters sang for the crowd. Castroville's
own Lynn and Beverly Tschirhart, were
two of the prominent dancers enjoying
the music at the dance which climaxed
the evening's activities.
Pages Host Party
Ghosts and goblins were treated to a
Halloween Costume Party at the home
ofTom and Jacque Page in Rio Medina
on Saturday, Oct. 24. Dressed in cos-
tume, the hosts greeted their guests as
they arrived. Jacque, as a boy scout,
assisted Tom (the little old lady)
throughout the evening.
Thirty friends enjoyed tamales and
beer.
Choosing a winner in the costume
contest proved very difficult, according
to Jacque. After everyone voted a three-
way tie resulted between Marion and
Debbie Haby, Stephen and Beth Bour-
quin, and Garland and Kathy Boehme.
After a run-off, the Boehmes, alias Cave
People, were declared the winners. They
received a bottle of champagne as their
prize.
Our neighborhood received a super
treat on Halloween Day, Saturday, Oct.
31, 1987, with the birth of Morgan
James Huegele Jr. in San Antonio. His
happy parents are our next-door
neighbors Connie and Morgan Huegele.
His grandmother is Dora Martinez of
Castroville. Mother and baby will be
returning home from the hospital later
this week. Congratulations to all!
Halloween Party
Rio Medina's cafe, The Sitting Duck,
was the scene of a Halloween Party
hosted by Vera Ayala, manager.
Friends and relatives came, some in
costume, others without, to join in the
fun and partake of the delicious food.
The evening buffet included assorted
dips, chips and crackers, sausage, ham,
cheese and pickles. From one table,
guests could choose from the all-time
favorite crispy bunuclos, or cupcakes
and cookies baked in a variety of shapes
and decorated in bright colors to compli
ment the holiday. All were made by
Vera's mother, Theresa Ybarra of Castro-
ville.
About nine o'clock, the costumes
were judged. Results were as follows:
Most original, Doris Keller who came
as the bag lady; Ugliest, a th,ee-way tie
of witches, Florence Hoffmann, Theresa
Ybara and Lupe Tijerina; Funniest
Twcedle Dee and Tweedlc Dum, Susan
Trevino and Cindy Arizsmendcz; and
Scariest Jimmy Mcchler, who was half
preppy and half punk.
The youngsters category was very
difficult to judge, so all were declared
winners. These included: Chrissy
Mechler, witch; Stephanie De La Cruz,
vampire; Anthony Mechler, bum;
Brandon Snider, Superman; Bronson
Lerma, accident victim; Helen Lerma,
black cat; Janna Haby, pumpkin; and
Rustin Haby and Weston Lerma,
cowboys.
Judges for the evening were Yvonne
Lerma and Patti Haby.
Delayed
Appearing in Saturday's San Antonio
Express-News was a story about Uresti
Camper Sales in San Antonio.
The company received the "Presi-
dent's Club Award," National first place
Loving Cup, and other outstanding
achievement awards from Leer of
Georgia. In an accompanying photo, the
awards were accepted by Jesse Jr.and
Mary Uresti of Von Ormy.
It was the 8th year the Uresti family
had the top camper sales in the chain of
dealers.
The annual awards banquet was held
in the Phoenix-Scottsdale, Arizona area.
Fifteen dealers were treated to five days
of Old West entertainment in beautiful
Camelback Inn. The dealers were treated
to Western dances and cookouts, horse-
races, hot air balloon rides, jeep rides,
golfing and other activities.
During the week, Jesse Uresti Jr. was
surprised with a gold ring with the
"King Leer Crown" logo.
Jesse Uresti Jr. and his wife Mary
have two daughters, Naomi Jean and
Katherine Jordan.
Jesse Jr. is the son of Jesse Sr. and
Susie Uresti of Von Ormy who started
the camper sales business in 1960.
Mary's parents are Delvin and Evan-
geline Bippert who live on Hwy. 90,
east of Castroville. Mary's grandparents
are Oscar and Alma Bippert of Hwy. 90
between Castroville and San Antonio,
and Mrs. Florence Kempf of Castro-
ville, and the late U.B. Kempf.

HAUNTING CREATURES ... were amidst the Halloween
activities at Medina Community Hospital Saturday. I he hos-
pital, along with Community EMS, sponsored a haunted
house. Children were required to give up their candy to he
x-rayed while they took a trip through the haunted halls. Ap-
proximately 500 persons toured the spooky place. Reaching
