Dallas Tkx Jan 1 The Dallas
and Waco road has been opeued for busi-
ness to New Creek a distance of ten
miles from this city The train leaves
Dallas at 330 p m and arrives at New
Creek at 415 p m aud returning
leaves New Creek at 830 a m and ar-
rives in Dallas at 915a m This sched-
ule is an elegant one It is not tar be-
hind the trunk and is run more for the
purpose of saving the charter of the road
than for the sake of traffic
The employes of the railroad offices in
this city had holiday today only enough
working to do necessary work
The advance in freight rates which was
to go iuto effect on the 10th inst has
been staved off until the 20th
Wants a Jioad
The Dallas Archer and Pacific Rail-
road Company has sold its charter and
franchise to a New York syndicate Four
miles are graded and twenty miles locat-
ed It is stated that the purchasers
have money to put the road through and
will put their engineers in the field at
once
We are under the impression that the
Dallas Archer and Pacific and the Fort
Worth Western had consolidated
and such may be the fact If not the
first one of them to penetrate this terri-
tory will secure a bonanza This
tountry is not what it was
two years ago it has passed the ordeal of
tho drouth period and its agricultural re-
sources are being rapidly developed It
harvested a bountiful crop this year and
with the fine weather and rains this
winter a big small grain crop next year is
assured It is also developing from a
range country into a stockfarming coun
trv good blood is being introduced into
itock of all kinds and if we mistake not
an era of general prosperity is dawning
upon it Come out and investigate and
build us a railroad gentlemen

THE STRIKE
The Humor tJtat the Stvifte Had Been Settled
J Little Previous
CniCAGO III Jan 1 In regard to
tho rumor that the strike of engineers of
the Chicago Burlington aud Quincy
Railway had been settled Second Vice
President Stone said yosterdays confer-
ence between the officials of the road and
the brotherhood committee had adjourned
till Wednesday which was evidence that
a conclusion had not been reached The
company he said would not recede in the
slightest degree from its present position
Not one man of the new engineers fire-
men switchmen or brakemen would be
discharged to make way for a striker
The company had no ill will against the
striking men and desired in no way to
persecute but justice must be done to the
new men
Is the strike in a fair way for a final
settlement Mr Stone
You may say the present committee
of nine has shown a better disposition to
treat fairly with us than any other They
are a fine body of intelligent men The
engineers it is uuderstoou are preparing
a manifesto which will be given the press
during the week Its contents or tho
nature of the subject 13 not given out
There are good reasons for believing
however it is a complete resume of the
late strike and a defense of the engineers
from their standpoint

NEW YEARS PARTY
An Enjoyable Entertainment Given by SIlss Cor-
rie and Laura Smith
A delightful entertainment was given
last uight by Misses Corrie and Laura
daughters of Mr and Mrs A B Smith
at the residence of their parents More
than 100 guests were present most of them
the misses and masters who in a short
few years will be the reigning belles and
beaux of Fort Worth society but many
also of maturer years who were present
to revel in the merriment of the young
folks and to enjoy a quiet chat and dig-
nified dance of their own
How the young folks did enjoy
themselves How they waltzed and
polkaed and schottisched How they
tripped through lancers and quadrilles
and frolicked through the Virginia reel
Happy happy youth The memories of
those blessed hours will linger long in
minds and hearts casting their radiance
over scenes of darkness and refreshing
with their fragrance hours of despon-
dency and gloom
The guests began arriving soon after
730 and before 830 the largo rooms
aud spacious halls were filled with the
most joyous throng where laughter ever
rang from sleeper to raftef The iarge
double parlors had been cleared for danc-
ing and when musics measured cadence
swelled upon the air nimble heels twink
eled merrily to the inspiring strains and
flashing eyes and beating hearts told of
intoxicating joys and pleasure unalloyed
At 1030 oclock supper was announced
and the guests were invited to a dining
room which was a bower of loveliness
Skillful fingers had been there to embel-
lish the board which groaned under its
weight of subslautials and glittered with
its array of dainties The decorations of
ferns and buds and open flowers were
beautiful and artistic and added zest to
appetites enticed by every delicacy which
taste could crave and market furnish
The charming little hostesses received
and cared for their gueses with the grace
aud tact born of a true spirit of hospi-
tality their efforts being ably seconded
by those of their parents who were ubi-
quitous and indefatigable in their zeal to
add to tho care and pleasure of everyone
present
It was 1230 when the last sweet strains
of music had died away the last good-
nights had been said and the last guests
had departed wishing a happy
happy new year to their hos-
pitable entertainers and left for
home with light hearts and minds
stored to repletion with sweetest recollec-
tions of a joyous happy night

Women In Street Cars
The manners of women in public con-
veyances vary but they all get off a
street car in the same way Watch any
particular one She motions to the con-
ductor aud slides to the edge of the seat
on which she sits perfectly still until the
ear gets to a full stop Then she walks
calmly to the platform On tho lower
step she hesitates leans forward peeps
up the street looks down the street
looks across the street gathera up her
skirts looks down and back to see that
they arfe not too high for propriety
glances shyly up to see if the impertinent
raenj are staring takes another look
around the horizon and departs The
conductor jerks the bell strap with
pernicious activity glares at the woman
until she reaches the sidewalk and then
hastily scans the faces of the men on the
platform He is looking for sympathy
But he gets none Every glance is shar-
pened at the fair creature who has just
alighted Philadelphia Press
