For the Galveston Journal.
Chronicles of the South Western American.
And it came to pass in those days, while the
children of Israel sojourned among the Gen-
tiles, that Jacob the son of Jeroboam, who was
the son of Nebat.. said unto Peter, his brother,
let us minister unto the people ot the land
and make for them a paper, even a newspa-
per.
And Peter did as Jacob commanded, and
brought unto the city called Houston, which is
by the waters of Buffalo Bayou, a press and
a type box and ink and paper.
But, behold the paper was as naught and
exceeding muddy to look upon; yea, the
Gentiles cried aloud in derision at the sight
thereof.
Howbeit, Peter girded up his loins and took
his hat in his hand and journeyed afar off to
the country of Louisiana. And when he was
come to the city called Orleans he took the
thirty ‘pieces of silver and bought paper and
type therewith.
And he returned again to the place "whence
he set out, even to Texas, and said to Jacob,
have not I done well.
Jacob answered, yea, verily. Now shall
we go to Austin and print and astonish the
Gentiles, and we shall become notorious
amongst the people and shall get their gold,
and their silver, and their lands, even their
head rights.
So Jacob and Peter made a covenant to-
gether, and Peter sat down in the chair to
write, and Jacob went out into the highways,
and wandered to and fro on the earth.
And the paper was called the South West-
ern American, for Jacob and Peter said a great
name is a good thing, therefore shall the peo-
ple think us great in all things.
Jacob said to the Gentiles we have called
our paper by a mighty name, therefore, I
pray you, let me have your money, and your
land certificates, and behold I shall make you
rich.
There were fools in those days, who hark-
ened unto the words of Jacob, for they were
smooth as the honey of Canaan and pleasant
as manna from Heaven.
But the wise men laughed Jacob and Peter
to scorn, and they became discomfited, and
their paper was more filthy than before.
And certain of the Gentiles sharpened their
knives and said, we will have the ears of Pe-
ter to feed the swine, and with a cow-skin shall
he be beaten, and with many stripes.
‘ Nevertheless, others said, he is a fool, there-
fore shall not a hair of his whiskers be harm-
d. Treat him according to his folly.
But Peter and Jacob said to themselves,
lere is a whig paper in Galveston, and we
ball frame huge lies about the editor thereof,
nd we will open our columns upon him and
ie people who cleave not unto the whigs
rill hearken unto us, and we shall yet be
rent.
Therefore, Peter run against the whig pa-
er; but it took him by the nose, and showed
i him a large building at Huntsville, called
le Penitentiary, and pointed to his ears and
,> one man who held a cow-hide, and auother
ho held a knife.
And, when he had seen all these things,
Bter was in great tribulation. Howbeit he
rned not from his evil ways, for his heart
as hardened, and the Gentiles laughed at
m as in times past. * * *
The Genuine Mrs. Partington.—Many
urnals in the country have perpetrated a
ariety of jokes at the expense of Mrs. Part-
gton, and the Boston Post has said some ad-
orable things in her name, which have been
3pied far and wide. Many persons esteem
her as a sort of Mrs. Harris, whose name is
merely a stalking horse for the convenience
lot newspaper wits. This is all a mistake;
i there was a real Mrs. Partington, and she
jbwed her fame to the wit of Sydney Smith,
Who, in a speech on the reform bill, at Taun-
on, in England, referred to her as follows :
I do not mean to be disrespectful, but the
ittempt ot the Lords to stop the progress of
•eform, reminds me very forcibly of the great
dorm of Sidmouth, and of the conduct of the
excellent Mrs. Partington on the occasion.—
In the winter of 1824, there set in a great
Hood upon that town, the tide rose to an in-
credible height, the waves rushed in upon the
houses, and threatened everything with de-
struction. In the midst of this sublime and
terrible stenn, Dame Partington, who lived
upon the beach, was seen at the door of her
house with mop and pattens, trundling her
mop and squeezing out the sea water, and
vigorously pushing away the Atlantic ocean.
The Atlantic was roused. Mrs. Partington’s
spirit was up ; but I need not tell you the con-
test was unequal. The Atlantic ocean beat
Mrs. Partington—she was excellent at a slop,
or a puddle, but she should not have meddled
with a-tempest. Gentlemen, be at your ease
—be quiet and steady. You will beat Mrs.
Partington.
Sharp Shooting.—Col. Peebles, says the
Bangor Mercury, tells us of an instance of
sharp shooting, He states that one of the
“rank and file” under his command once dis-
charged six shots at a barrel rolling down a
long hill, he being at the bottom of the hill.—
Upon the barrel reaching the bottom of the
hill it was examined, and no mark of a bullet
was discovered upon it, whereupon his com-
rades began to ridicule him. He, however,
very coolly desired them to shake the barrel,
by doing which, they found that the bullets
were inside—the whole having entered the
bung-hole, at which point he had aimed. This
is the toughest shooting story that we have
seen.
