Kitchen Work Boards
A non-splintering kitchen work
board can be made from tempered
pressed wood, a hard, grainless all-
wood fiber board. The glossy sur-
face will neither absorb odors nor
turn the edges on knives.
Do not let the flag touch floor or ground.
Do not place any object or emblem above the flag.
Do not use the flag as drapery. Use bunting.
Do not use the flag as part of a costume or uniform.
When used on a motor car, the flag should fly from a staff.
Do not use the flag in any form of advertising.
Above are six tips for flag etiquette as outlined by Mrs. Russell B. William^
Chicago, chairman of the flag committee of the Daughters of the American
Revolution. The D. A. R. is in the midst of nationwide campaign to popularize
flag etiquette.
On important national holidays pa-
triotic citizens throughout the coun-
try like to display the American flag
as outward evidence of their loyalty
toward their nation.
On days like these, being familiar
with proper flag etiquette is valuable
and important. For rather definite
and well-defined courtesies toward
the national banner have been de-
veloped in military and civilian
practice of flag display.
Most people realize in a general
way that good care should be given
the flag and its use as a common
piece of cloth should be avoided.
But sometimes lacking is the knowl-
edge of more specific rules regard-
ing its display.
Compiled here are a few rules of
flag etiquette for the display and
use of “Old Glory.”
C. When the flag is displayed on a
wall, the stars should be ttftoard the
left with the stripes floating to the
right.
C, When hanging with the stripes
in a vertical position, the stars
should always appear in the upper
left hand corner.
C. On parade, the American flag al-
waj s claims the place of honor—at
the right.
<L When flown at half-staff, the flag
should he hoisted to the peak for a4
instant and then lowered to the half-
staff position. Before lowering the
flag, it should be raised again to the
peak. On Memorial day, May 30,
the flag should be displayed at half-
staff from sunrise until noon and at
full staff from noon until sunset.
CL The flag must not be used as a
table cloth. Nothing but the Bible
should rest upon the flag.
CL Never display the American flag
with the union down except as a
signal of distress.
C The flag should never be used to
decorate platforms or stands, or
draped in any fashion for decorat-
ing purposes.
CL When used to cover a casket, the
flag should be placed so that the
stars are at the head in the upper
right-hand corner (over the heart)
looking from the foot. The flag
should not be lowered into the grave
nor allowed to touch the ground.
CL No other flag should be hoisted
above the American flag except a
church pennant, whieh can be flown
from the masthead above the Stars
and Stripes when religious services
are in progress in a military chape)
or aboard a URited States navy shin.

hind-reds of interior and e>
terior color schemes, shown in
huge color - photo reproductions
on pages two square-feet in area,
are the feature of a new color-
styling portfolio which was re-
cently received by local paint
headquarters. Known as the Paint
and Color Style Guide, the giant
portfolio is lent to householders,
realty men and decorators at no

The illustration above shows,
in black and white, one of the
hundreds of rooms illustrated in
full-color in the collection. A
royal blue wall-to-wall carpet
covers the floor, while the walls
are painted in a soft, harmonious
medium blue. Ceiling is warm
rose-tan, and fireplace, bookcase
and other trim is white enameled,
providing a smart contrast be-
tween warm and cool and light
and dark colors. Draperies and
chair-covers are flowered blue-
green chintz, sofa is a dustj
orange and tables are Walnut.
According to the Decorative
Studios of Sherwin-Williams, who
selected the color schemes in the
Guide, all the paint colors showr,
come ready-to-use or are achieved
merely by mixing two standard
colors. Also, the color photos show
exactly how a given color will
look in a room, and the guessing
and disappointment that formerly
occurred when colors were chosen
from tiny color “chips” is now
eliminated.
