the scene when the strikers withdrew
At one or two other places nonunion

CHICAGOS TREASUKERS
For Years last They Have Drawn Personal
Interest on City Funds Suits Ordered
Chicago Iu April 22 The oity
council last night adopted a resolution
which will cause th egentlemen who
have officiated as treasurers of the city
during the past ten years some trouble
In a message to the council some time
ago Mayor Cregler stated that for years
past the city funds have been kept on
deposit in one or more banks selected by
the treasurer and drawing interest
amounting to a large sum annually
whioh sum has been retained by the
treasurer as personal emolument with-
out sanction of law and contrary to sound
public policy The flnanoe committee
last night reported directing the cor-
poration counsel to bring suit upon the
official bonds of each and every city
treasurer who has ocoupied that office
during the last ten years to the end that
such personal emolument so reta ined by
said treasurers shall be recovered from
taid treasurers nndu from their sureties
and turned into the treasury of the city
of Chicago where said interest rightfully
belongs The amount of interest which
has been pocketed by the oity treasurers
for years past is estimated all the way
from 30 000 to 550000 yearly

Pork Pnctinc and Provisions
Cincinnati Price Current of Thursday Con-
siderable gain is shown in the hog movement in
the past week Western packing returns indicat-
ing a total of 295000 against 185000 the preced
total
ing week and 150000 a year ago making a
of 1280000 since March 1 compared wltn 1210
000 last year an increase of 70000 hogs Pack-
ing operations last year in April were not in ex-
cess of corresponding period in the preceding
year but in May there was a very decided in-
crease and still larger in June Hogs are in
good condition as a rule Prices have varied
moderately in leading markets during the week
and at the close are about the same as a week
ago Eastern shipments are on a somewhat re-
duced scale In the provision trade the feature
of the week has been unusual changes in range
of prices at Chicago particularly in pork due
to overselling business
The weeks advance for May delivery is S22
on pork thirty cents per 100 pounds on lard
and forty cents on short rib sides Aside from
the unsettledness arising from the speculative
condition there is evidently considerable firm-
ness in the trade with a fair distribution of
product but not exceptionally large toward
Southern markets The weeks exports were
fairly liberal but considerably short of the
movement usually shown for some time past
With a view of indicating closely the total
packing and marketing of hogs in all the sec
of the country during the year the follow
tions
ing is submitted for twelve months ending
March 11890 compared with the preceding year
according to Cincinnati Price Current investiga-
tions showing the reported packing West and
