knows that unless a garden is woU ma;.
nirivd, carefully prepared, planted and
cultivated, it is worthless. It is just
as easy then to exorcise care in tho
saving of seed—and there is scarcely a1-'"
vegetable, the seed of which may not __
x3 saved perfectly well by any one who ’
raises vegetables—as in the planting „
and cnltiyation of toq yegetabl.es. {In ^
regard t^ the other point, some may bd v ,
inclined to take issue with us. v
But aside from the. plausibility of
the theory, experiments havejtoo often
shown the truth of it to leave any
doubt about it. We hold that the
seeds uf plants that mature early iu
out Southern climate become so dried
out by the long, dry season before tho
cool weather comes on-, that they take
axmmh lofi^cr liimj io germinate When
planted than if they had matured late .
in the season just before-frost, as is the
case in more Northern olknatee. In
the case of the Irish potato for instance,
it has always been held tbit potatoes
grown in thf South would not bring so
esilyacrop as tho Northern growu.
V
We admit that this is the cose in re
gard to the first planting of potatoes,
of which the early vsrietiee mature
. with us in June. .* If theee potatoes ore
left in the ground, they ore liable to
sprout; if taken up and kept till next
season, they have, become so dried that
they undoubtedly take longer to ger-
minate‘than fresher potatoes from the
Ise. But if these
North or anywhere el
potatoes, dug in June, are planted at
ones, the second crop made by them,
if weUAeptaad planted the next spring,
will make os good potatoes and as ear-
ly as any teed that can fee. bad.
The tame rule holds good us fur as
we have tried it with the seed of any
other vegetable. Its consideration of
the fact then, that from twenty dollars
to thirty dollars worth of seed have to
l>e bought every spring in order to
make a garden for a dozen persons, it
is well worth the while of all who raise
vegetables for homo use to go to^ tho
trouble of......planting very
