al support. This she did and
ironically she, too, was inter-
viewed and hired as a steward-
ess by Eastern Airlines while
her friend was employed by the
Houston Independent School Dis-
trict as an instructor of French.
Thus her career with Eastern
Airlines in 1967.
After five weeks of Flight At-
tendant training in Miami, Flor-
ida, she bacame a Spanish qual-
ified Eastern Airlines Steward-
ess and flew for a year and
eight months before becoming an
In Flight Supervisor. Her duties
included on the job and recur-
rent training of Flight Attend-
ants required by the Federal
Aviation Agency; counseling
and-or disciplining flight attend-
ants on job performance stand-
ards; maintaining and updating
all pertinent qualifications;
training and personnel records,
i She also served as a recruiter
for three years; as a Spanish tu-
tor; and as a base editor to the
monthly newspaper called the
“Cabin Crewser”. During her-
seven years with Eastern, she
has been based in Miami, Flor-
ida; Chicago, Illinois and she
currently resides in Atlanta,
Georgia. On her off days from
the airline industrious Gloria
has worked as a substitute tea-
cher in foreign languages and
as an extra for several television
commercials.
On February 1, 1973, Gloria
was promoted to the position of
Quality Assurance Staff Mem-
ber. She, along with eight other
persons, is responsible for the
overall quality of service to cus-
tomers by observing, evaluation
and audit of such areas as cater-
ing and liquor provisions, air-
craft cleanliness, ground servic-
ing and emergency equipment
supply. She identifies and inves-
tigates reported discrepancies
and recommends corrective ac-
tion. She also serves as a project
coordinator for implementation
of new services; charter or spec-
ial service programs; observes
and measures in flight perform-
ance of Senior flight attendants
and crew as recommended by
in flight. Always in this work
there are memorable experienc-
es so Gloria cited a few: getting
an autograph from Willie Mays
on a paper napkin; having Rose
Kennedy on board on ole of her
flights and having Mohammed
Ali write her an “on the spot”
book of poems.
Her travel experiences include
trips to Greece, The Bahamas,
Canada, London, Jamaica, Mex-
ico, and Bermuda. She is over-
joyed now that her aunt and
uncle, parent substitutes, have
now been given reduced rate
travel privileges and can now
future trips, perhaps to Africa
and-Or the Orient.
Gloria secures inspiration from
reading the biographies of Rose
Kenedy and others and she be-
lieves there are many good
things in life to come her way.
This well may be for as abril-
liant child who began her edu-
cation career at Texas College
Nursery, she continued a steady
rise in knowledge and under-
standing of people not to be halt-
ed even by the shock which
came from the loss of her belov-
ed parents during her high
school days. She perhaps draws
inspiration and information from
a source higher than can be
found in “Desiderata” - from
one whom she met early during
her days at Miles Chapel C.M.E.
Church.
